6th Grade Math and Science Mrs. Beyenhof, Room D116 WELCOME to an EXCITING year! Common Core Math 6 We will focus on all aspects of Sixth Grade Mathematics including Number Sense, Fractions and Decimals, Algebraic Expressions, Area and Volume, Ratios, Integers, Equations, Data Analysis and Statistics. We are using the Big Ideas curriculum for 6th grade, focusing on the California Common Core State Standards. Science Course Description 6th grade science is all about the Earth! We will learn about the scientific process, Earth’s energy, heat, plate tectonics and Earth’s structure. This course emphasizes building on prior knowledge through increasingly challenging situations and preparing students for future science classes in middle and high school. Our text is CPO Focus on Earth Science. Grades will be calculated using a weighted average. Grading for Math: Tests Quizzes and Projects Homework Interactive Notebook/Class work 50% 20% 10% 20% Grading for Science: Tests Quizzes and Labs Homework/Class work Interactive Notebook/Projects 50% 20% 10% 20% SCALE: 90 and above = A 89-80 = B 79-70 = C 69-60 = D 59-below = F Assignments All assignments are required and expected to be turned in on time, neat and complete. Assignments are often begun before the end of class. Any portion of the assignment not completed in class is to be completed at home. Examples from each section of the assignment will often be done together as a class before individual work begins. Problems need to be numbered, written out, and all work shown for complete credit to be given on each assignment. Incomplete assignments do not receive full credit – every problem must be addressed and at least attempted. Homework credit is given for effort. Daily homework assignments are worth 5 points. If the assignment is not done, it will receive a grade of zero; however, the assignment still needs to be completed so that the learning can take place and so as not to lose more points at the end of the unit when notebooks are checked. Homework is 10% of the total grade, but the notebook is 20% of the total grade. Homework To enrich the learning process, students should expect 30-45 minutes of homework daily (MondayThursday). Homework may be required over the weekend for special projects. Math homework will either be from the textbook, workbook, or in the form of a worksheet. To receive credit for the work, students must write the problem (if it is from the textbook), complete it (in pencil), and show all their work. ***IT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE TO WRITE THE ANSWERS ONLY.*** Incomplete homework will not receive full credit. Corrections must be made in ink. Science homework will consist of reading the text, gathering information, and completing assignments, labs, or projects. *** Except in the case of an absence, late homework will not be accepted. However, all assignments need to be completed before the notebook check at the end of the unit! ***Remember, the notebook is 20% of the total grade!!!*** I try to keep daily assignments posted on my website so please check my web page often!!!! Late Work (Projects only): In the case of projects, late work will be accepted up to three days after the due date. Students will automatically lose one letter grade for one day late work. If a student turns in a project three days late their grade automatically starts at a D even if it is A quality work. Please encourage your child to turn work in on time! Note: REGULAR HOMEWORK will not be accepted late. Absences/My teacher web page For each day that a student has an excused absence, he/she will have one day to make up his/her work. Any projects that were due on the date of the absence are due the day the student returns. The student is responsible for checking the homework tab on my website (Go to Dorothy McElhinney website, teachers, Mrs. Beyenhof, Homework.). In class, students will find an agenda for the day, any handouts that were provided, and homework assignments on the board. In the event that a student misses a test, the student is responsible for scheduling an appointment with me to make up the test. The same time requirement applies for making up tests as for making up work missed because of an excused absence. Cheating & Plagiarism: I will adhere to the zero tolerance policy for cheating and plagiarism. If a student is caught, he/she will receive a zero for the assignment and will receive an additional assignment (packet) related to the topic of cheating, what it is, and why it is so serious. In addition, the incident will be reported to the office for further disciplinary action. Behavior: Classroom Expectations: Be Respectful: Treat everyone in the classroom with respect and kindness. Be positive and helpful toward your classmates.
