Goal Area 8: Global Perspectives Develop a comparative perspective and understanding of one’s place in a global context. The entire course addresses this issue, as it focuses on Latin America, in contrast to the United States. Students who finish the course will have a deeper understanding of the place of Latin America in the world, and thereby, their own place 13. In order for a course to be designated as fulfilling Goal Area 8, it must address at least 4 of the 5 student learning outcomes (SLOs) below. Through lecture, discussion, writing assignments in the form of exams and papers, students will achieve SLO 1 byrecognizing the disitinctiveness of Latin America and their connections to it through social science writing, literautre, popular culture, economics, and politics. SLO 2 by describing the similarities and differences within Latin America, differences that are cultural, social, linguistic, political, economic, geographic, and relational, as well as distinct from and similar to similar phenomena in North America. Students will know the map of Latin America. SLO 3 by analyzing political, economic, and cultural elements that shape the relations among Latin American nations, as well as their connections to the United States. Students will also analyze these elements in regard to diversity within latin America, as well as between Latin America and the US. SLO 4 by analyzing several key issues in Latin America including the effects of the colonial encounter, general relations, education, and political activities that havehad substantial effect outside Latin America. SLO 5 by articulating a vision that includes a more subtle awareness of the importance of Latin America and its 15.
