Course bulletin description, including credits and semesters to be offered:
FREN 102. Elementary French II
Vocabulary, grammatical structures and an introduction to the cultures of the French-speaking world. Emphasis
on the spoken language, some reading and writing. Promotes understanding and appreciation of the cultures of
the various French-speaking coutnries. Required lab/library assignments. Must be taken in sequence. A
recommended companion course for students considering a major or minor in French is FREN 110. Intended for
students with little or no previous study of French. 4 Cr. F, S, SUM.

Gen Ed and students with less than two years of high school French
wishing to expand on high school language learning. It also is often used by
students in degree programs under 45 credits, where students can use one
year of a foreign language in place of a minor. It is also designed for
student planning study abroad in French-speaking countries.

Goal Area 6: Humanities & Fine Arts
Expand appreciation and critical understanding of changing modes of human expression and systems of
thought in the arts and humanities, and develop abilities in the creation and performance of meaning.
Our courses teach students how to communicate and create meaning in a
new language. French 101/102 are taught as communicative language learning,
where the goal is to learn the language to negotiate/create/express meaning.
On the basis of that premise, our class time and outside-class activities
promote an understanding of what it means to express oneself in another
language, how language is a means to communicate personal and creative
ideas. French and other French-speaking countries have contributed in
profound cultural and historical ways, to such diverse fields in the
humnanities, such as music, religion, philosophy, literature, architecture,
and the visual arts.

SLO1. Students will view and analyze contemporary reporting on
cultural and artistic achievement in French-speaking areas. in all
continents (TV 5 Francophone Channel and internet site).
SLO2. Students will identify, describe and analyze works of art,
architecture and cultural achievement and contributions from France and
Francophone countries, using the UNESCO World Culturage Heritage sites.

SLO3. Students will describe and compare works of art, architecture,
literature and music from culturally diverses countries where French is
spoken.
SL05. Based on topics such as personal identity, family relationships, daily
activities, popular culture, students will write short compositions
(observation/reaction) and engage in role-playing activities, video-segments
and create blogs.
SLO7. Students will explore diverse means of communication by using four
modalities (listening, writing, speaking and reading) and by viewing visual
and performance art (exhibits, film, theater, opera) and print texts as
available on-line and in textbook materials.
