The international phonetic alphabet. The phonemes of the English language from physiological and
phonological perspectives. Utilization of the IPA to improve pronunciation skills and understanding American
dialects. 3 Cr. F.

Goal Area 6: Humanities & Fine Arts
Expand appreciation and critical understanding of changing modes of human expression and systems of
thought in the arts and humanities, and develop abilities in the creation and performance of meaning.
The CSD 220 Phonetics class meets Goal Area 6 because it explore the processes of human
communication in people, the concepts and principles of articulatory phonetics, the International Phonetic
Alphabet (IPA) and teaches students skills in phonetic transcription. The ability to accurately transcribe spoken
lanaguge provides students with knowledge and skills that serve as a foundation to help individuals who have
communication disorders..
