Course bulletin description, including credits and semesters to be offered:
Social and academic life on a United States (US) campus. focus on cultural adjustment cycle
and strategies that help students integrate themselves in US campus life. Required for international
undergraduate students from school outside the US or Canada. International students who have
studied in the US for at least one academic year full-time are exempt. Graduate students are exempt. 2

The main pool of students come from new international students, as well as US citizens and
permanent residents, who are required to take the course. This course also fulfills the SCSU
requirement for Academic English Proficiency via the College ESL Program.

Provide a concise explanation of how the following goal is a “significant focus” of the proposed course.
Goal Area 6: Humanities & Fine Arts
Expand appreciation and critical understanding of changing modes of human expression and systems of
thought in the arts and humanities, and develop abilities in the creation and performance of meaning.
This course focuses on learning about and adjusting to a new culture. The new culture in focus
happens to be the US culture for the clientele of this course. Students learn about crosscultural
similarities and differences, about the relationship between language and culture, and about
intercultural communciation strategies with specific emphsis on learning about the acaemic culture in
the US context. These fit into Goal Area 6 (Humanities & Fine Arts).

outcomes (SLOs) below. Check the SLOs below that are focused on in the proposed general education course.

issues.
SLO #6: Students conduct research about crosscultural issues using varous research methods such as
interviews, observations, surveys, etc., and they present the results.
SLO #7: Students learn about the relationship between culture and language in both intra- and intercultural contexts.
