Diaspora and immigration; relations to other groups of color; anti-Asian movements; identities and
representations; Model Minority Myth; activism; achievement/contributions of Asian Pacific Americans. Prereq.:
one of 201, 215, or approved Racial Issues course. 3 Cr. F, ALT.

Provide a concise explanation of how the following goal is a “significant focus” of the proposed course.
Goal Area 5: History and the Social & Behavioral Sciences
Develop understanding of human societies and behaviors, and of the concepts, theories, and methods of
history and the social sciences.
This course will explore the politics of studying Asian Pacific Americans; issues of race; public policies
such as immigration and naturalization laws, militarism and war and contemporary immigration; Model Minority
Myth; health issues and identities of Asian Pacific Americans; anti-Asian movements; relations with other racial
groups; representations and self-definitions; Asian Pacific American activism and empowerment; and discussions
of social locations and outsider/insider politics through interdisciplinary readings from literature, history, ethnic
studies, women's studies, and sociology. Methods and concepts/theories from social science and history such as
Critical Race Theory; Feminist Theory; Intersectionality; Quantitative and qualitative methods of research;
Critical analysis of history to understand contemporary issues; Analysis and critique of public policies; and
Analysis of power relations and community response will be addressed.

SLO 1 is achieved through readings from multiple disciplines.
SLO 2 is achieved through class discussion; videos such as "Blue collar and Buddha," "Unnatural causes," "AKA
Don Bonus," "Whose children are these?," Daugher of Danang," "Searching for Asian America,”
and "Troubled Paradise"; and writing a comparative media analysis paper.
SLO 3 is achieved through class readings, class discussions, and outside event paper.
SLO 4 is achieved through the discussions of social location and outsider/insider politics of researching about
Asian Pacific Americans, and final paper.
SLO is achieved through class facilitation and current conversation paper.
