Goal Area 5: History and the Social & Behavioral Sciences Develop understanding of human societies and behaviors, and of the concepts, theories, and methods of history and the social sciences. This course will examine the oppression and resistance of Asian Pacific American women; the effects of public policies and global issues such as globalization and war; immigration and health issues; intersection of race, class, gender, immigration/citizenship status; domestic violence and hate crimes; politics of representation and self-representation; and empowerment and contributions of Asian Pacific American women through interdisciplinary readings from literature, history, ethnic studies, women's studies, and sociology. 13. In order for a course to be designated as fulfilling Goal Area 5, it must address at least 4 of the 5 student learning outcomes (SLOs) below. SLO 1: Students will fulfill this objective by reading and analyzing sources about and by Asian Pacific American women. Students will learn historical events, and gain practical experiences with the methodologies of historians and social scientists. Students will demonstrate their competencies through class discussions and written work. SLO 2: Students will fulfill this objective by investigating the social construction of race, and the intersections of race, class, gender, citizenship and other forms of oppression. Students will learn about the diversity within communities of Asian Pacific American women. Students will demonstrate their competencies through class discussions and written work. SLO 3: Students will fulfill this objective by investigating historical and contemporary racial ideologies, colonization, wars, and racist/sexist policies that affect Asian Pacific American women. Students will also learn ways in which Asian Pacific Americans have resisted oppresssion. Through this process, students will again an 12/11/2009 understanding and develop critical analytical skills that will enable them to explain and explore solutions to historical and contemporary social problems. Students will demonstrate their competency through class discussions and written work. SLO 4: Students will fulfill this objective by critically analyzing their own identities and social location within the context of racial history in the United States. They will also examine their positionality when researching about Asian Pacific American women. Students will demonstrate their competencies with these issues through class discussion and written work. SLO 5: Students will fulfill this objective by investigating how the intersection of race, class, gender, sexuality, national origin, citizenship, immigration status, etc. shape the experiences of Asian Pacific American women. Students will demosntrate their competencies through class facilitation and written work. 15.
