COMMUNITY SERVICE-LEARNING (CS-L) 2016-2017 Student Employment Application Service Coordinator Description 1. Integrate service-learning into the classroom curriculum by being the liaison between JMU students and the community agencies of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham area. 2. Conduct classroom visits for the purpose of communicating the services of CS-L with presentations throughout the first two weeks of the semester. This time is used also for students to sign up for their service placements and plan a time to meet with the Service Coordinators in a small group setting to receive more information about their service-learning experience. 3. Facilitate reflection meetings mid-semester to emphasize the “What, So What, Now What” service continuum. Through planned activities, students reflect and discuss their service, how it applies to their class/ major, and what they can do in the near future to continue their service. 4. Communicate and meet with the community agencies, keep track of students’ service-learning hours and complete other office and managerial tasks in order to maintain the efficiency of the office. Service Coordinator Duties 1. Attend Staff Training during the week of August 15th, 2016. (FROG Week) 2. Conduct classroom visits for the purpose of communicating the services of the CS-L office and placing students in community agencies. 3. Maintain regular and ongoing contact with students, faculty, and community agencies to facilitate the effective matching of needs and resources. This includes students in and out of classroom experiences and clubs and organizations of the JMU community. 4. Develop and maintain accurate information on community agencies to be distributed to members of the JMU community. This includes going on site visits to community agencies throughout the semester. 5. Keep and monitor accurate records regarding service learners' experience in community agencies. 6. Share in the facilitation of and actively participate in biweekly CS-L staff meetings (2 hours per week). 7. Actively participate in at least one standing CS-L committee. 8. Share in the office duties to promote the functioning of the Community Service-Learning program. 9. The hourly wage position requires a commitment of 10 flexible hours. This includes 6 office hours for administrative tasks and office coverage, and 4 hours for site visits, community development, committee work, and a variety of other tasks. 10. Plan and facilitate reflection sessions for service learners. Service Area Position Descriptions Aging and Health Services: This service area works mostly with the elderly population in one-on-one interactions and group activities in assisted living and retirement communities as well as the Health department. Disability Services: This service area is focused on providing opportunities to interact with adults with disabilities and the available services for them. The agencies within this area are mainly focused on adults and children with physical and mental handicaps in residential, learning, occupational and recreational areas. Youth Empowerment Services: The area of Youth Empowerment Services provides an excellent opportunity for students to interact with various communities within the area. Service opportunities can range from tutoring children or working with the Boys and Girls Clubs.
