International and Interdisciplinary Symposium on the Role of Storytelling and Orality in the Imaginary, Literary Aesthetics and the Arts

Following the November 2008 colloquium in Martinique, “Realism and Modernity in Caribbean and Panamerican Literatures,” GRECFAC will dedicate an international and multidisciplinary symposium to the exploration of storytelling and orality in literary aesthetics, visual and performing arts, and the imaginary.

Throughout history, cultures of storytelling have remained vital to the different peoples of the world. In its morphological, performative, and scriptuary variations, storytelling has also deeply influenced writers and artists’ thinking, their representation of reality, and their understanding of the cosmos.

We seek to examine storytelling as both a system of expression and as an influence on various written and visual forms. What might comparative and multidisciplinary approaches storytelling reveal about the overlaps and expansions in different media and genres? What more might we learn about the ways in which myths and legends continue to feed to the popular imagination?

Possible subjects may include:

• history and evolution of storytelling:

• The storyteller: symbols, figures, and representativity

• Storytelling, philosophy, and didactics

• Storytelling: from theatricality to theatricalization

• Storytelling as an inspiration for novels

• Influence of storytelling in the visual arts (film, photography, and plastic arts )

Please send a 250-word abstract before March 20th, 2010 to Dr. Jean-Georges
