The Accessibility for Manitobans Act
became law on December 5, 2013.
• Legislation applies to all organizations that
provide goods and services
• Identify, prevent, and remove barriers to
participation
• Accessibility Plans due in 2016
• Commitment to make Manitoba inclusive for
everyone by 2023
Accessibility Standards
• Will set out requirements for
organizations to identify, prevent and
remove barriers within a designated
time period, depending on the
complexity of the area.
Accessibility Standards will target 5

• Nov. 1, 2015 Designated public sector
organizations will have two years to become
compliant
Barrier free access to goods and services
• Organization must establish and implement
measures, policies and practices respecting
barrier free access to services provided
• Identify barriers to accessible customer
service
• Seek to remove barriers
• If existing barriers cannot be removed then
provide access by alternate means
• Seek to prevent new barriers from being
created
• An organization’s policies must
recognize that a person who is disabled
by a barrier may be accompanied by a
service animal
• May use assistive devices to
remove/reduce the barrier and
measures implemented must
reasonable accommodate the use of the
devices
Training
• Train all staff regarding upholding the
duty to accommodate as defined by The
Human Rights Code (Manitoba), the
AMA, and the Customer Service
Regulation
• Must track when the training is provided
• Make sure websites are accessible –
WCAG 2.0
Public Events
• Announce events in a manner that is
accessible
• Hold events in accessible meeting
spaces
• Physical and communication needs of
person disabled by barriers are met on
request
• Inform people when there are temporary
barriers to faculties or services
