THE UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA CLASS SPECIFICATION Technology Transfer Specialist II Revision Date: Classification: Unit: Hay Point Range: July 2008 Technology Transfer Specialist II AESES 663-723 CHARACTER OF THE JOB Technology Transfer Specialist II’s will apply their specialized knowledge of intellectual property issues without referral and will keep abreast of developments in this area of specialty. In the day-today administration of duties they are expected to assume a high degree of initiative as they conduct patent assessments of assigned intellectual property and to develop, recommend, and implement a commercialization plan appropriate to the specific technology. The work of this classification is distinguished from that of Technology Transfer Specialist I’s by the autonomy exercised, mentorship and training of junior staff members, and the demonstrated proficiency in the development and successful implementation of disclosure agreements. CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Respond to inquiries related to intellectual properties (patentable, copyright or trademark) directly and indirectly. Relying on an understanding of the underlying basic science theories, and using National and international search mechanisms, conduct patent assessments of assigned intellectual properties. Relying on an understanding of the underlying basic science theories, and using primary and secondary (published and private) data conduct market assessments of assigned intellectual properties. Develop, recommend and, ultimately, implement a commercialization plan appropriate to the specific technology. Develop and implement technology bundling opportunities on assigned intellectual properties. Negotiate confidential disclosure agreements, sponsored research agreements, option agreements, inter-institutional agreements and license agreements as appropriate to management of assigned intellectual properties. Liaise with external patent agents in the course of managing assigned intellectual properties. Build the Technology Transfer Office’s relationship with a diverse set of constituencies including researchers, industry representatives, venture capitalists, economic development agencies and service providers. Represent the Technology Transfer Office in regional, national and international meetings related to intellectual properties and to the commercialization of intellectual properties. Participate in the development of informational programs designed for a diverse set of constituencies including researchers, service providers, investors, economic development agencies. Plan, control and evaluate a legal investment on assigned intellectual properties. Using software and equipment in the Technology Transfer Office build data bases related ownership, patent prosecution, costs, commercialization efforts and financial administration. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED The minimum qualifications necessary for acceptable (satisfactory) job performance are: Level of Formal Education and Experience PhD. in Business/Science plus 3 years of directly related experience in research and market analysis. An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be acceptable. Skills and Abilities Must have excellent interpersonal skills. Highly motivated and self-directed. Outstanding oral and written communication skills, and the ability to deal with a wide range of people. Ability to understand technical material. Excellent problem analysis and problem solving skills, along with demonstrated ability to synthesize effective solutions. Requires good computer skills (databases, spreadsheets, internet) Must have the ability to prioritize tasks and work under extreme time constraints.
