I was told by a friend who comes from Holland, and her comments about Europe in general, that the wealthiest in European countries pay the highest percentage of taxes for the benefit of societal needs. I was told that Holland's wealthiest pay 70% to the Government for the benefit of their citizens. We have too much excessive greed in the USA, and unnecessary consumption of too many material objects in our country to the detriment of most of our contributing citizens. In Europe, the wealthy appear to share this burden without too much difficulty and they have more than enough for their families and heirs! After all, sharing in this way all will benefit -- democracy is more universal and on a deeper level, is ethically and morally superior to the tax system we now have to put up with. Poor people are burdens to society--we need more opportunity through education, and expertise through science and technology that benefits the majority of people in our Great Nation. Let's remain strong and vibrant, and set an example for all to be proud of. Let's not be hypocritical and tell the world that our democracy is the best giving lip service to this phrase, while depriving millions in the USA the opportunity they deserve to move forward in their lives with good health, education and economic security. Respectfully, Edith Amster PS: Look what happened on Wall Street recently with the Enron Scandals with the help of other corporations, that stole billions with the consent and approval of many in the business community--they got away with unscrupulous investment actions, and feel no remorse. HOW CAN WE ALLOW THEM TO GET AWAY WITH THIS THROUGH BANKRUPTCY! Perhaps we should demand of every CEO to sign a pledge to the Government that if they do not apply ethical standards to their corporate actions, they WILL HAVE TO PAY A HEAVY PERSONAL PRICE! They should loose every cent they have. The SEC needs more power to balance out WALL STREET'S ACTIONS. Please contemplate on solving this very serious problem in our nation, and give serious attention on not allowing such ruthless, heartless, unethical practices to take place in the future!
