Return with Honor Course

Updated 3/20/14

“We are waging a war with sin, my brothers and sisters, but we need not despair. It is a war we can and will win.

Our Father in Heaven has given us the tools we need in order to do so. He is at the helm. We have nothing to fear.

He is the God of light. He is the God of hope. I testify that He loves us—each one.

Mortality is a period of testing, a time to prove ourselves worthy to return to the presence of our Heavenly Father.

In order to be tested, we must sometimes face challenges and difficulties. At times there appears to be no light at the tunnel’s end—no dawn to break the night’s darkness. We feel surrounded by the pain of broken hearts, the disappointment of shattered dreams, and the despair of vanished hopes. We join in uttering the biblical plea “Is there no balm in Gilead?” We are inclined to view our own personal misfortunes through the distorted prism of pessimism. We feel abandoned, heartbroken, alone. If you find yourself in such a situation, I plead with you to turn to our Heavenly Father in faith. He will lift you and guide you. He will not always take your afflictions from you, but

He will comfort and lead you with love through whatever storm you face.” – President Thomas S. Monson

Purpose

The Return with Honor Course has been designed to help prepare you to return to BYU-Idaho. The principles that you will examine closely during this course are founded in the gospel of Jesus Christ, and as such, can transform your life and character as you diligently study and apply them.

As you complete these assignments, we encourage you to share personal examples and stories of how your faith has grown. However, we ask that you do not discuss why you were asked to leave BYU-Idaho.

Please remember that your responses will be reviewed and discussed by a committee to determine the depth of your learning and your readiness to return to BYU-Idaho.

Instructions

Below are five assignments that you are required to complete. Upon completion of these assignments, you should submit your work to the Student Honor Office, where it will be reviewed by the Return with

Honor Committee. This committee will make a recommendation regarding the removal of your disciplinary hold. The Student Honor Office will then notify you regarding the decision through mail. To allow time for review, the assignments should be submitted at least three weeks prior to the admission deadline or registration deadline for which you want to be considered.

If the Return with Honor Committee determines that your understanding is not sufficient, additional assignments may be required in order to help you prepare to return to the university. Each assignment is focused on one or more principles that you are asked to study. For each assignment you will find a list of materials that will aid you in your study of that topic. You should also seek out and study additional sources on your own that you have found to be helpful and relevant. In your write-up for each assignment, please reference at least two talks, two scriptures, and one other source (videos, books, etc.) . Please do not rush through the questions and your responses.

While completing these assignments, we encourage you to include personal experiences and refer to and cite the sources that you have studied for each question. Before responding to each question, teach a friend and/or family member about what you have learned. In each assignment, detail your teaching experience and what you gained from the discussion.

Your responses can be saved in this Word document, and submitted to the Student Honor Office through e-mail at sho@byui.edu
