Subject: Natural Science Requirement
Date: January 26, 2010
At the Scholastic Standards Committee on January 7, 2010, we discussed the natural science requirement of eight credits. As you know, we deal with many transfer students. Sometimes students will transfer in a three credit science class with a lab and the department indicates it is equivalent to one of our science classes, but they can only receive the three credits that they took at the other school. The student then will take another science class for four credits here at LSSU and they end up with seven credits. The result is that they either petition the Scholastic Standards Committee for a waiver of one credit or they have to take another four-credit class to make up for that one credit.
The Scholastic Standards Committee recommends to the General Education
Committee that we change the natural science requirement to indicate 7-8 credits instead of 8 credits.
