DEPARTMENT OF RECREATION STUDIES AND EXERCISE SCIENCE ASSOCIATE DEGREE IN HEALTH / FITNESS SPECIALIST IN OVERALL PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES The Health and Fitness Specialist graduate applies knowledge of exercise testing and prescription, strength and conditioning and the development of health and fitness programs to prevent disease and disability and improve physical performance. Lake Superior State University graduates in the Health and Fitness Specialist Program: Will apply the personal communication skills necessary to motivate clients to begin, enhance, adhere or return to an exercise program. Will have developed the requisite skills to professionally assess cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance, body composition, flexibility, power, functional fitness and power. Will design exercise-training programs based upon the evaluation, development and maintenance of healthy levels of fitness. Are able to identify, evaluate, operate, and instruct with various types of exercise training equipment. Will understand the fundamental methods to assess dietary habits and prescribe developmental and maintenance interventions. Will have developed the ability to communicate effectively through discussion, written work and oral presentation Will understand the fundamental knowledge of professionalism, ethical behavior and personal responsibility in the field of Health and Fitness Will demonstrate the ability to instruct a variety of clientele on proper exercise form and technique. Will be prepared to sit for the certification as Health/Fitness Instructor through the American College of Sports Medicine
