Create a small sculpture to attach to the medallions Subtracting Clay (leather hard) 1. Incise a linear design by cutting into the clay. 2. Carve a low-relief design. 3. Pierce the clay to create designs through the disc. Colored slips (leather hard) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Paint designs using brushes and sponges. Trail slip a design using the slip trailer Scratch through a slip coat to the base clay (sgraffito). Add slip to incised or stamped areas and wipe surface slip (mishima). Use wax resist to create designs with wax to repel colored slip. Terms: • Slip-a mixture of clay and water • Plastic-when clay is fresh and new. Right out of the bag. • Leatherhard-the clay has started to dry and harden, but you can still carve into it. • Sprig-a tool in which you push clay into a form. • Mishima- a technique in which you add clay to incised areas of the clay and wipe away the excess slip from the surface. • Sgraffito-scratching through a layer of slip to expose the clay underneath.
