Health Science Hospital Rotations Student Orientation and Training Policy
Purpose:
The student orientation and training guidelines provide for training and education of students in the
Health Science Program participating in hospital rotations/clinical observations in order to assist in improving
individual and group performance, meet regulatory requirements, and provide information for initiation and
implementation of the student tasks/observations. The student is expected to maintain safe working conditions and
follow proper procedures at all times.
Any student participating in hospital rotations/clinical observations is required to attend the facility’s orientation and
training prior to beginning hospital rotations/clinical observations. The student training must meet applicable
regulatory requirements and must be completed prior to beginning hospital rotations/clinical observations. Elements
of the orientation requirements include but are not limited to key safety content, health care facility wide and/or site
specific policies and procedures, specific scope of practice/ tasks qualified to do, infection prevention, sensitivity to
cultural diversity, and patient rights and ethical practices. Additionally, each student must complete the initial tests
and exhibit required competencies prior to beginning hospital rotations/clinical observations.
The student must be educated in regard to HIPAA and consequences/disciplinary actions as a result for not adhering
to HIPAA. The student is required to pass the HIPAA test with a score of 100% to participate in hospital
rotations/clinical observations.
The student orientation and training must be conducted by the designated facility’s Director of Professional Practice,
Education & Community Health/Director, Research & Learning Resource Center/ facility designee with the assistance
from the Health Science Instructors.
Confidentiality Statement:
Confidentiality is of major importance when caring for clients and working with Health Care Facilities. Students are
personally responsible for maintaining confidentiality and complying with policies, including those related to the
Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), in each agency to which they are assigned.
Violation of confidentiality will result in disciplinary action, possibly a failing grade for the course, and/or
termination from the program.
Any personal data that is collected for the purposes of completing an assignment for coursework is to be altered such
that the identity of the patient is protected. The data is to be destroyed upon completion of the course. Students will
only engage in personal data collection for patients in relationship to the requirements of the course. Students will
maintain the utmost confidentiality in relation to any patient information that they obtain through their progress in the
curriculum. Student information is also considered personal and confidential for all students in the program and will
be treated as such by all Health Science Instructors. All students and instructors will refrain at all times from any use
or disclose of information related to any patient or student encounters. (Refer to Health Science PHI Policy)
Maintenance of Ethical and Professional Standards Statement
Failure to maintain the high ethical and professional standards of the various disciplines of the health professions
may subject a student to suspension or other appropriate remedial action by the Health Science Program.
A student enrolled in the Health Science Hospital Rotation Class is subject to disciplinary action up to, and including,
suspension and dismissal for engaging in the following acts of misconduct, regardless of whether such misconduct is
engaged in, on, or off, campus:
1. Owned or controlled property; Commission of an offense classified as a felony by criminal statutes or by
Federal criminal statutes.
2. Unlawful use, possession, or sale of drugs or narcotics, whether or not felonious.
3. Plagiarism, falsification of records, or other act which substantially impugns the integrity of the student.
4. Other unprofessional and unethical conduct which would bring disrepute and disgrace upon both
student and the Health Science Program, and which would tend to substantially reduce or eliminate the
student’s ability to effectively represent the Health Science Hospital Class in a professional manner.
A student that has been accepted into the Health Science Hospital Rotation class will be subject to the above
provisions and may be denied continuation in the class on the basis of his or her failure to maintain the
aforementioned ethical and professional standards.
Accordingly, students are responsible for conducting themselves in a lawful manner and in compliance with all Health
Science rules and policies along with the Health Care Facilities Policies and Procedures.
