Day 6 STAAR Review 5 Court Cases Marbury v Madison • Established judicial Review • Supreme Court has final say in interpreting the Constitution • This helped create a lasting balance among the three branches of government • Increased the power of the judiciary and the federal government • Chief Justice: John Marshall McCulloch v Maryland • The Supreme Court upheld federal authority by ruling that a state could not tax a national bank. • Chief Justice: John Marshall Gibbons v Ogden • The Supreme Court ruled that interstate commerce could only be regulated by the Federal Govt. • Strengthened the federal government • Chief Justice: John Marshall Worcester v. Georgia • Supreme Court ruled that only the federal government, not the states, could make laws governing the Cherokees • Jackson ignored the ruling and forced the Cherokees out of Georgia beginning the Trail of Tears • Strengthened the federal government • Chief Justice: John Marshall Dred Scott v Sandford • Dred Scott (slave) sued for his freedom but lost • Supreme Court decision allowed slavery to be extended into territories and new states • Said that Slaves are property wherever they travel • Northern States disagreed with the decision • Chief Justice: Roger Tawney
