TRAINING AGREEMENT BETWEEN ACA STUDENT AND
AUTHORISED TRAINING PRINCIPAL
Explanatory notes
There must be a training agreement in the form outlined below between the ACA Student (Provisional
Member) and the Authorised Training Principal which is signed by both parties.
The Training Agreement below is not useable by an ACA Student and a Qualified Person
Responsible for Training within an ICAEW Authorised Training Employer.
The ACA Student and Authorised Training Principal should both keep copies of the signed Training
Agreement. The ICAEW may request a copy of the Training Agreement at any time but a copy does
not need to be provided when the Student registers unless the ICAEW requests to see it.
A Student under a Training Agreement or a Student who has served under a Training Agreement
must not engage in public practice as described by the ICAEW unless they meet the conditions set
by the LPD Student Regulations relating to the conditions for practising when not a Member.

Specific guidance relating to clauses in the Training Agreement
Clause 1
Approved Training is defined as practical training and work experience
obtained for the purpose of equipping the Student with the technical
knowledge, work experience, professional skills and attitudes necessary
for membership of the ICAEW.
Clause 2
Clause 2 of the Training Agreement requires the start date and length of
the Training Agreement to be entered. A Training Agreement between
ACA Student and Authorised Training Principal can last between 36 and
72 months (six years) unless there is special dispensation granted under
the LPD regulations to vary this period.
Clause 4, 6 and 7
The ICAEW website has additional information on responsibilities with
regard to training records, Professional Development and professional
ethics.
Clauses 8-12
The Authorised Training Principal is the supervisor of the ACA Student’s
(Provisional Member’s) training but is not responsible for facilitating or
providing study leave or financial support for the Student, including paying
the annual student fee, examination entry fees or credit for prior learning
fees; these areas remain the responsibility of the Student.

This Training Agreement governs the Approved Training to be gained by the Student and
supervised by the Authorised Training Principal for the purpose of equipping the Student
with the technical knowledge, work experience, professional skills and attitudes necessary
for membership of the ICAEW.
2.
This Training Agreement begins on __________________ and will continue until the
Student has completed ___________ months of Approved Training, subject to the
provisions for termination as set out in clauses 11 and 12.
3.
The Authorised Training Principal agrees to supervise the Student’s Approved Training
throughout the duration of the Training Agreement.
4.
The Student agrees to:
a.
use every effort to achieve the standards of study specified in this Agreement
b.
use every effort to achieve success in all assessments
c.
undertake Professional Development and update training records on a six monthly
basis
d.
complete appropriate training in professional ethics
e.
make a proper contribution to the work of their employer throughout the duration of
the Training Agreement.

For the avoidance of doubt, this Training Agreement is not a Contract of Employment
between the Student and the Authorised Training Principal.
Training records and reviews
The Student’s progress to membership of the ICAEW will be reviewed at six monthly

intervals by the Authorised Training Principal. This will include the Authorised Training
Principal commenting on and verifying the Student’s training records.

The Student will maintain their training records and make these available to the Authorised
Training Principal when requested.
Training, Study and Examination Costs
It will be the responsibility of the Student (not the Authorised Training Principal) to arrange

any study leave or financial support for the ICAEW examinations. The Authorised Training
Principal shall have no responsibility in this regard.

It will be the responsibility of the Student to pay to ICAEW any Student fees levied on ACA
training, such as the Annual Student Fee.
Entering for Examinations
10.
The Student is responsible for entering for ACA examinations before the closing dates
given by the ICAEW.
11.
The Student (not the Authorised Training Principal) must pay the examination fees (and
any related credit for prior learning fees).
Should failure to submit the examination entry before the closing date result in the
payment of additional fees, the Student will be liable for these fees.
12.
Termination
13.
This Training Agreement may be terminated:
by mutual agreement between the parties; or
a. when in the first four weeks of this Agreement either party may for any reason give
not less than seven days’ notice in writing to the other; or
b. by the Authorised Training Principal giving four weeks’ notice to the Student in
writing, if he or she believes the Student lacks the capability to progress to
membership of the ICAEW. Lack of capability may include, but is not confined to,
the following:
 poor study performance;
 poor performance in ICAEW examinations;
 poor performance in practical experience at work.
14.
This Training Agreement shall automatically terminate:
a. upon termination of the Student’s employment; or
b. on the date an order is made under the ICAEW’s Disciplinary Bye-Laws that the
Student is declared unfit to become an ICAEW member, or
c. on the date an order is made under the ICAEW’s Disciplinary Bye-Laws that the
Authorised Training Principal is declared unfit to remain an ICAEW member; or
d. if ICAEW otherwise determines that the Authorised Training Principal is no longer
a fit and proper person to supervise this Training Agreement.
15.
This Training Agreement may not be altered or amended.
Disputes
16.
In the event of an ACA training dispute between the Authorised Training Principal and the
Student which cannot be resolved, the matter may be referred to the ICAEW who may be
able to mediate. ICAEW reserves the right not to become involved if it deems the matter to
be an employment matter or otherwise something outside its remit.
