Math Informational Letter
6th Grade Mathematics | Mrs. Turrubiarte
(940) 369-1545 | bturrubiarte@dentonisd.org
Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year. We are very glad to have your 6th grader with us this year. This will be a great
year of new experiences and enlightening discoveries in mathematics! This letter is to familiarize you with
procedures and policies specific to math. Please also see the Team Information letter that you are receiving
separately for general Team information. We look forward to a very productive year with your student.
MATH JOURNAL
Students will keep a math journal which will contain notes, vocabulary, and examples of work covered in class and
online (at home). This journal will be used to help your student with homework completion and to study for tests,
and to have a reliable resource of their learning in the math classroom. Students must bring their journal to class
every day to keep up in class assignments and discussions.
Homework
Because we will cover a new concept daily, your student will typically have homework 2-3 times a week. Homework
is not optional and must be completed at home. If tutoring assistance is needed, some effort towards completion
must be shown prior to the student’s arrival at tutoring. Homework is not to be completed in other classes during the
day. To help with any difficulties your student may have, I have a flipped classroom. A flipped classroom is a class
where students watch videos of the notes at home, so that we may practice the more difficult problems in class. Each
week students have 2-3 videos to watch at home. I also post videos that can help with homework that students the
students can watch at home.
Tutoring
I am available after school on Wednesday until 4:00pm and before school Thursday from 7:45am-8:15am. By
appointment other days. This is a great opportunity for me to help your child with make-up work, to get caught up on
their notebooks, or any other help they need to succeed in my math class. The computer labs will be available
Tuesday and Thursday morning from 7:45 until 8:10 for students to get extra help on any math programs that may be
assigned.
Grading Policy
Graded assignments will be categorized as either major or minor grades. They will be recorded in the grade book
with the standard being assessed. All work will be completed and given to the teacher in a timely manner. Difficulty
on learned material and assignments will result in the student attending tutorials. The average for each grading
period is calculated as follows (DISD Policy):


Minor Summative 30%
Major Summative 70%
Make-up Work
It is the child’s responsibility to complete missed assignments. Quizzes and Tests should be made-up during the next
class day. All other assignments (class notes, activities, homework, etc.) will need to be completed in tutorials. To
gather the missed work the child has several options:
