Taking Band, Choir, Orchestra, Theater Arts or Art will meet the middle school fine arts requirement.
The required PE Wellness uniform is a gray t-shirt and navy shorts that must be purchased from the P.E.
department.
STAAR Accelerated classes will be assigned to students based on STAAR results. This will
result in the loss of elective classes.
MCMATH MIDDLE SCHOOL ELECTIVE COURSES FOR SIXTH GRADE
BEGINNING BAND (full year) Students will have an introduction to musical instruments and concepts of band. The
band director must conference with parents and students concerning instrument selection. Beginning instruction
classes are grouped according to like instruments. Students will be required to attend one dress rehearsal outside the
school day in preparation for concert and contests. Band members will participate in a variety of extracurricular
activities during the year. This is a year-long class that satisfies middle school fine arts requirement.*
CHOIR (full year) Students will learn beginning vocal techniques and fundamental music skills. Students interested
in singing will have the opportunity to participate in a number of performances at a variety of locations including
concerts, invitational contests, and school programs. This is a year-long class that satisfies middle school fine arts
requirement.*
(BEGINNING) ORCHESTRA (full year) This class is open to beginning orchestra students, who did not participate
in elementary school orchestra. This is a year-long class that satisfies middle school fine arts requirement.*
(CONTINUING) ORCHESTRA (full year) Students who select orchestra as their first choice must have one year of
playing experience in their fifth grade orchestra. This continuing course is designed to refine and improve your
playing, music reading skills, and self-expression through music. Orchestra members will participate in a number of
performance opportunities, including concerts, in-school performances, and invitational competitions. This is a yearlong class that satisfies middle school fine arts requirement.*
ART (full year) In this class students may work with drawing, painting, printmaking and/or crafts. Understanding and
appreciation of self and others through art culture and heritage will be emphasized. This satisfies middle school fine
arts requirement.
THEATER ARTS (full year) This class is an introduction to drama class. This is a working class in which students
are expected to participate in the writing, reading, cutting of scenes, researching of materials, preparing, rehearsing and
performing of creative segments in groups or individually. This satisfies middle school fine arts requirement.*
KEYBOARDING In this class students will develop computer keyboard mastery techniques, speed and accuracy,
copy arrangement and communication skills in addition to beginner Microsoft Office Suite skills.
INTRODUCTION TO TECHNOLOGY This class is designed for students to explore theoretical and current
real-world problems while brainstorming and designing possible solutions to those problems.
*Waivers are available to pay expenses of uniforms and instruments for students who qualify for assistance. Students
have the opportunity to compete in UIL sanctioned contests and must maintain eligibility in order to compete.
