Reflux – Analysis for doctor Date Dear Dr Re: Name and address Your patient has visited our website, www.cough.co.uk. They have filled in a questionnaire, which we have designed using the European Respiratory Society’s guidelines on chronic cough. From their completed questionnaire we estimate that they probably have a diagnosis of reflux induced cough. The ERS guidelines endorse therapeutic trials as a method of establishing the diagnosis in chronic cough and in the case of reflux cough an initial trial with proton pump inhibitors at high dose for a minimum of two months is recommended. Alginates (Gaviscon Advance) are also advocated, particularly in patients resistant to PPI therapy. We have asked the patient to come to you to discuss the potential diagnosis and treatment options. If you require any more information about us or about chronic cough please feel free to visit our website at www.issc.info. Yours sincerely PROFESSOR ALYN H MORICE Professor of Respiratory Medicine Head of Division of Academic Medicine
