Problems of the Era
Fundamentalism V Modernism
There was a clash of ideas during this time.
The Bible fundamentalists were fighting with
those who believed in modern thinking.
The biggest clash was the “Scopes Trial”
• Tennessee had outlawed the teaching of
evolution in science classes.
• John Scopes taught it anyway and was
arrested and put on trial.
• Clarence Darrow V William Jennings Bryan
Once again Fundamentalism V Modernism
•Prohibition was adopted in 1920.
•It was the 18th Amendment.
•The Fundamentalists won this round.
•The manufacture, transportation and sale of
alcohol was made illegal.
New Words in the vocabulary:
1.Volstead Act – The prohibition law
2.Bootlegger – People who smuggled liquor
3.Speakeasy – An illegal bar
