Social software encompasses a range of software systems that allow users to interact and share data. (This computer-mediated communication has become very popular with social sites like MySpace and Facebook, media sites like Flickr and YouTube, and commercial sites like Amazon.com and eBay.) Many of these applications share characteristics like open APIs, service oriented design, and the ability to upload data and media. The terms Web 2.0 and (for large-business applications) Enterprise 2.0 are also used to describe this style of software. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_software The HORIZON REPORT 2008 Emergent technologies and their relevance to teaching, learning and creative expression / http://www.slideshare.net/bochamberlain/the-horizon-report-2008-presentation The 6 Emergent Technologies • Grassroots Video • Collaboration Webs • Mobile Broadband • Data Mashups • Collective Intelligence • Social Operating Systems Emergent Technology The main sections of the report describe six emergent technologies or practices that will likely enter mainstream use in learning-focused organizations within three adoption horizons over the next one to five years. Grassroots video • Tools for assembling and editing clips are free or extremely low cost e.g. FixMyMovie (www.fixmymovie.com) enhances the quality of digital video & optimizes it for online distribution • There are dozens of web communities that offer easy-to-access outlets for distribution and richly featured search and tagging functions Video Contest Submission Allen County Public Library http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUxp3E3YUdQ Video clips on the Library’s FB http://www.facebook.com/pages/Pretoria-South-Africa/UP-LibraryServices/34563526704 YouTube channel for UP Library http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sy0f-qHSHM4 Collaboration webs • To manage the creation and workflow of rich media projects (see www.splashup.com for photos and www.jumpcut.com for videos, to name just two examples); capture a sketch with audio narration (www.sketchcast.com); or publish presentations and slideshows (www.slideshare.net; www.slide.com ). • Online collaborative workspaces: do-it-yourself social networks like Ning (www.ning.com); sharable personalized start pages that are “pagecast”—shared, in other words—from services like Netvibes (www.netvibes.com) or Pageflakes (www.pageflakes.com ); and social networks like Facebook (www.facebook.com). I think this is the best library I've been in so far... I really don't mind the fact that some of the computers don't have editing capabilities on some levels because I the end of the day, most students are registered for at least 2 other computer labs plus the library... Anyway, I like the fact that they have the reserved collection. Some of us don't have the budget for expensive textbooks... I just enjoy the humanities level because they have a collection of French books that I always wanted to read when I was a kid back in DRC… Business Facebook for UP Library http://www.facebook.com/pages/Pretoria-South-Africa/UP-Library-Services/34563526704 Facebook: Information specialists available in the student environment Embedded slideshare on Special Collections Mobile broadband • There are more than a billion new mobile / cell phones produced every year - one for every six people on the planet • Mobiles are increasingly about networking on the go. Better displays and new interfaces make it easier to interact with an ever expanding variety of content • Mobiles now keep us in touch in almost all the ways that laptops used to; with email, web browsing, photos and videos, documents and shopping- all available without the need for a hotspot or a power outlet. Download our blog on your phone http://merensky1.mofuse.mobi/ Data mashups • Mashup - a web application that combines data from more than one source via a single unified tool. i.e.- data visualization. • Tools like Google’s Mashup Editor http://code.google.com/gme/ and Yahoo Pipes http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/ both make it relatively easy to create applications that grab online data organize it and display it the way the author wants. Integrating MeeboMe (a chat function) with the University of Calgary catalogue Collective intelligence • The knowledge imbedded within societies or large groups. • Explicit: knowledge gathered and recorded by large groups. • Implicit: intelligence that is distilled from data generated by the activities of people over time. • Examples: Wikipedia (www.wikipedia.com), Cellphedia and other self-correcting, social encyclopedias provide opportunities for research and self-study, giving students the chance to practice the construction of knowledge, as well as consuming it. Social operating systems • The main idea is to place people and relationships at the center of informational space • Paradigm shift from the web as an application and file sharing platform to the view that the real value of the network lies in the way it helps us create, identify and sustain relationships • Analysis of data mined from all available data i.e.- cc fields of email, attendee lists from conferences, tagged Flickr photos, comments in blogs, co-authored presentations and papers and so on… • Collaborative research Yahoo Life! concept … a service the integrates email, structured data, social context, tags and a variety of other applications. http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=7503 Consolidated SAMI VRE components Repositories: research results; experiments; literature & documents Identification of research area Literature review & indexing Dissemination & artifacts Skype, smart board, video conferences E-learning system for researchers (Collaborative) Electronic Lab book Integrated data management system Red: none Orange: some Yellow: all Web/wiki/blog: search engines, databases; researchers & topics; funders, portals, communication, projects Real time communication Identification of collaborators Proposal writing Training / mentoring etc Scientific workflow Servers with data files Internal shared database of indexed articles Sophisticated instruments that generate digital information and data Mathematical modelling tools; numerical algorithm tools; simulation software; in silico experiments Identification of funding sources Document management system Generic software e.g. MS / Open Office Project management Access to research networks & super computers; access to labs with in silico screening + Project management system (Free) Data analysis software VRE demonstrator Access and authentication Library resources Internet resources Alerts and RSS feeds – may help with info overload Horizon report 5 year meta trend: Games as pedagogical platforms Games developed for information literacy: general & catalogue
