LSU EMERGENCY MEDICINE MISSION STATEMENT
2014-2015
It is our mission as chief residents to be the voice and representation of our residency program. We
will strive to provide excellent leadership through example, teaching and positive reinforcement.
Furthermore, we want to increase the level of expectation across the board to continue to elevate the
level and status of our training program.
Things we want you to know:
1. YOU HAVE A VOICE.
As chiefs, we are here for you. We pledge to be available, facilitate discussion and help answer
questions. Your opinions and feedback shape our residency. We want and rely on your input.
We plan to continue residency forum after Journal Club each month, but you should anticipate a
more organized format as we hope this will allow more constructive conversation and a
broader input from the group. We also pledge to have weekly mini-residency forum after
conference to allow a continuum of information flow. We, the chiefs, will always be available to
meet with you as individuals, with your class reps or with your class as a whole at anytime.
2.
YOU ARE SAFE.
We are your nest and vault. We encourage each of you to approach the chiefs first and directly
with any of your concerns. Our special role allows us insight into more global implications,
delicate situations and to implement creative problem solving. We want you to come to us first
and foremost before engaging faculty, so that we can work together with you. You should
expect confidentiality and timeliness as we work to solve any problems that arise. For issues
that you do not feel comfortable being identified with, we are developing an online, anonymous
reporting tool for you.
3. YOU ARE EXPECTED TO DO YOUR JOB.
The bare minimum is not our goal. We want excellence, from each of us.
Doing your job entails:
- Responding to and handling email concerns within a timely manner. According to professional
etiquette, accepted standard response time is within 24 hours.
- Attending conference regularly. Everyone should well exceed the 70% minimum. We are
working to eliminate any negotiable barriers to this. Failing to meet the ACGME minimum will
not be tolerated. We will work with you to solve this problem if it arises.
- Completing training modules and paperwork in a timely fashion. This is professionalism. You
are a professional.
- Showing up on time. MER shifts begin 15 minutes prior. If you are late without contacting
anyone, you will receive one free pass after which penalty shifts will be enforced.
- Conference and Journal Club are not frele time when you’re scheduled for a shift during those
times (M1, M2, Intern MD/MN). This applies to both UH and all off site rotations. This means
that same rules apply as for a shift. We understand that clinical duties can cause you to be late
coming from an M2 to journal club. If you’re an intern on the MN, you are expected to be at
journal club on time.
- Moonlighting during conference or journal club is not acceptable.
- Completing your academic requirements: morning report cases, conference lectures, QI and
scholarly projects, being prepared for conference and journal club, as well as passing the inservice exam. These are not optional. Teaching and learning from our peers is an essential part
of our learning experience.
- Chiefs reserve the right to implement penalty shifts without a warning for egregious
infractions which can include, but are not limited to, things like being greater than 30 minutes
late without notice, not showing up for a shift, being repeatedly late even with notice, being out
of compliance with your contract, not doing your job, etc.
- This is everyone’s blanket warning, you will not be warned about your job requirements
again. It is important that we maintain excellent communication. Contact the chiefs if you are
concerned about tardiness, potential absence or any issues preventing you from excelling at
your job. Traffic, mess, life happens to all of us, but if we aren’t on the same page we can’t help
you. Communicate!

WE WANT YOU TO HAVE A FULL LIFE
We hope to continue to encourage our faculty to become more directly involved in resident
education. This includes teaching during your shifts as well as their attendance at conference
and journal club. Their experience and wisdom is invaluable to us and we want to facilitate the
sharing of their knowledge in the best way possible. We want your feedback regarding high
quality as well as insufficient instruction from our faculty members so we can address in real
time.
Residency isn’t just a job, it’s a life experience and we are all in it together. We hope to improve
camaraderie, loyalty and a unified bond as we all survive this journey.
We hope that this outlines our goals as we work together to creatively and constantly move our
program forward to even greater heights.
