SGA Minutes- April 14, 2009 5:30pm; CSRB 563 I. Meeting called to order by Scott Nelson II. Students Affairs – Dr. D. a. Upcoming L4s - interviews for Dean letters are beginning this month b. Upcoming L3s – schedules are due this week, turn in forms to Student Affairs c. Dean’s Office – i. State vote this week to raise tuition to ~$20,000/yr. If this passes, it will go through the state legislature. Strong possibility that this will happen and the tuition increase would take place this fall. Financial Aid would increase funding accordingly. d. Meeting with Dr. Fontenot (Alumni Affairs) – i. Wants to get alumni more involved with current students through an alumnistudent mentor program ii. Wants to expand alumni association and its involvement to better represent the demographics of all LSU alumni e. Earl K. Long – change in structure i. Earl K. Long in process of developing an arrangement with Our Lady of the Lake ii. Surgery/Medicine program will be run out of Vista facility in Baton Rouge iii. Some clinics will be moving to Lafayette iv. Concern about impact on training if clerkships are run out of OLL – students will be further removed from patient contact/care since most patients are covered by insurance; different patient population than what students are currently seeing at Earl K. Long. v. Unknown when this agreement will take place and affect students but will likely be within the next 6 months. f. Housing in BRi. Danny Robinson –multiple apartment complexes in the Perkins area is currently being considered. ii. Will be a step-wise move to new housing; not all students will be in the same apartment complex but will be close in proximity. iii. These plans are still not firm. g. Ms. Bobbie i. Needs upcoming L3 Special Scheduling Requests this week. ii. Upcoming L4 must fill out Focus. lsumedstudents.com has list of available courses. Ms. Bobbie will send out descriptions for available courses. iii. All current L3s must turn in Pediatric stuff immediately. III. Katie Wolfe- Homeless Clinics a. Recently Elected New Officers i. Adult Clinic President – Danielle O’Banion ii. Women’s Clinic President – Melissa Spera IV. Scott Hebert- National Guard a. One of four LSU student recruiters for National Guard b. He is currently on active duty and acts inform students about opportunities available with the National Guard. c. Looking into sending out program information to incoming L1s and graduating L4s. d. Unlike the Air Force, Navy, Army Health Professions Scholarship Program which require students to fulfill a 4 year commitment and to match to a military residency, the National Guard program allows students to match to any civilian residency and students cannot be deployed until after residency. Active duty is not incurred until after medical school. V. Chase – AAMC representative a. Along with Ben Kurtz are going to national conference at end of April b. Discuss current problems and solutions at all medical schools c. If anyone has issues/questions about how things are done at other medical schools, please email Chase prior to April 23rd. VI. Sancta St. Cyr – SNMA a. SNMA’s national conference was held this past weekend. b. LSU’s chapter received special recognition at banquet for its participation c. L4 Michelle Durham served on the national conference committee VII. Recap of Current Events: a. Scott Nelson – President i. Protégés Mentor Program – Scott will be asking current L4s to sign up if interested to provide resources to other students. ii. This information will be available for students who are looking at doing away rotations or applying to residency in other cities/states. iii. Dr. Fontenot will start looking for graduates around the country to develop a national database of LSU Alumni b. Rachel Pastorek – Executive VP i. Family Day – thank you for helping with skits, tour guides, etc. ii. LCME Accreditation for LSU will take place in November. Currently working on preliminary student report. School’s consulting firm will review the report at the end of April. LCME site visit will take place in November 2009. c. Scott Stafford – Community VP i. Tiger Run raised over $11,000 for Homeless Clinics and other student-run programs. ii. Thank you for your help and support! d. Lisa Dang – Social VP i. Year End Party this Friday April 17th at Cat’s Meow, 9pm. ii. 2 FREE premium drink tickets with LSU ID; guests welcome. e. Stephanie Bourque – Secretary i. Humanism in Medicine essay information has been sent by email. ii. Essay submissions are due on April 24th at 5pm. iii. Winner receives $500 and opportunity to read essay at L2 White Coat Ceremony in July. f. No announcements from Carter Davis, Treasurer or Jason Au, Technology Chair. VIII. SGA Elections – a. Sign-up: April 14 – 18 at 5pm in Student Affairs b. Elections: April 19 – 22 on lsumedstudents.com c. Run offs: April 23 – 26 d. Contact person who currently holds office if you have questions about specific position. IX. Class Officer Elections – Scott will send out email with dates and information. Be sure to check and read your email regularly! a. Sign-up for Class Officers will be held during SGA Officer elections. X. L4 graduation is May 15 – 16. Will need SGA volunteers to help out with set- up and programs, especially on May 15th. Location- Lakefront Arena at UNO. XI. Meeting adjourned by Scott at 6pm.
