Flash 8 – Amazon Kindle
The target market for eBook readers like the Kindle is adults ages 35-54 (Demographics). We
could expand this market to include children ages 2-116 by developing a new product, the Kiddie Kindle.
The Kiddie Kindle is specifically designed to meet the needs of children in areas of learning and
educational leisure. We will increase revenues by selling the Kiddie Kindle to families with small children,
and by taking a selling fee out of every transaction a content provider makes over the Kiddie Kindle. We
should promptly invest in developing the Kiddie Kindle to capitalize on this revenue-increasing
opportunity.
The Kiddie Kindle is a Kindle that is tailor-made for kids. It can be used to read their favorite
stories and to act as a companion during their learning and development as well. The Kiddie Kindle has a
rugged case that’s designed to withstand the most traumatic collisions that a kid could subject it to as
well as waterproof casing and screen to see the Kiddie Kindle through any spilled drinks. A stencil is
added to the Kiddie Kindle to allow children to use the games & puzzles menu. In this menu, kids can
solve all kinds of puzzles, write, play learning games, color in coloring books, and other activities of that
nature. To increase the allure of reading, we are also implementing 3-d visioning technology to let books
create pop-out images that make the story more engaging. Finally, to give parents peace of mind, we
will implement parental controls.
Two chief revenue streams that the Kiddie Kindle creates are sales revenue through sales of the
physical Kiddie Kindle, and selling fees for publishers who offer services or materials through the Kiddie
Kindle. Everyone wants their children to get the earliest start at succeeding in life, and buying a Kiddie
Kindle for them will be a wise option to stimulate a child’s learning and entertain the child. Aside from
having a market to sell to, many companies will be attracted to the Kiddie Kindle as a medium through
which they can deliver their own products. We will essentially copy the Kindle’s current business model
of charging a fee of 15% of the selling price plus a 99 cent fixed fee on all Amazon market transactions.
The cost of making the Kiddie Kindle will include manufacturing cost, shipping cost, advertising, as well
as ongoing R&D. It will take a year to design and come up with a final prototype. Despite the costs of
bringing it to the market, the Kiddie Kindle must be invested in so we can seize this opportunity to open
our Kindle brand to a whole new market.
