Students must complete 150 hours of service during their four years of high school to qualify for the Honor. The 150 hours include getting started and trained, the service itself, and reflection. All Option B applications for Summer 2013 should be submitted and approved no later than June 28, 2013. Prior to May 23rd the summer service learning applications MUST be approved by your schools’ Service Learning coach. Option B: Extracurricular Service Learning Students earn Option B hours by participating in service learning activities that are not part of any academic class. In the summer, the activities may be sponsored by a community organization or organized by one or more students with an original idea. Some places students serve in the summer include hospitals, Mesa Parks and Rec, elementary schools programs, summer camps, nursing homes, and animal shelters. Students may NOT “baby-sit for free” or volunteer at a for-profit business, for relatives, or as part of religious worship. The Rules Option B hours must be pre-approved by a Mesa schools “Service Learning Coach” BEFORE the hours start to “count.” It is best if an application is turned in to the student’s Service Learning Coach before school is out for the summer. Paper copies have been available at the schools, or students may download an application at www.mesaservicelearning.org/Honor. If a student finds a good volunteer activity after May 23rd, it still must be pre-approved. Students have three options: 1. E-mail the application as an attachment to Mr. Walsh at wpwalsh@mpsaz.org. He will mail the timecard to the student. 2. Hand carry an application to one of the service learning coaches teaching summer school, during June only, at these schools: Theresa Ratti – Mesa High School, Denise Hakala – Smith Junior High Rebecca Ross – Kino Junior High 3. Bring the application to the service learning office, 155 N. Center St., Mesa 85201 and receive a timecard then. If the service activities on the application are approved, the student will be given a timecard for each volunteer site. While the student is volunteering over the summer, she/he should complete one timecard per site. The timecard will be due to the Service Learning Coach upon return to school in August. Please note: A reflection will need to be completed prior to hours being recorded. MESA PUBLIC SCHOOLS HONOR FOR EXCELLENCE IN SERVICE LEARNING OPTION B: STUDENT APPLICATION FOR EXTRACURRICULAR SERVICE DIRECTIONS: Complete one application for each club or organization for which you serve. For example, complete one for a school club’s service activities, one for volunteer work at an animal shelter, and another one for all the service you will do at church this year. THESE ACTIVITIES MUST BE PREAPPROVED. THEN YOU WILL RECEIVE A TIMECARD. RETURN THIS FORM TO SERVICE LEARNING COACH SHEPPARD IN ROOM 212.
