Reflections on Georgia Politics
Notes:
Cathey Steinberg discusses her early childhood in Kingston,
Pennsylvania, and her subsequent travels around the
country. She recalls ending up in Georgia and being
asked to run for legislature against George Petro.
Steinberg recalls running for the state house of
representatives. She describes her campaign strategy and
how it caused her to become familiar with her
constituents. Steinberg reflects on her experience as a
female and as a Jewish person in the legislature. She
recalls the distrust and paranoia that she faced as an
outsider. Steinberg remembers interacting with Tom
Murphy and getting the hang of serving in the House
chamber. She recalls the ladies of the House not having
a "members only" restroom like the men had and Speaker
Murphy's decision to establish a ladies "members only"
restroom. Steinberg comments on her committee assignment
struggles and her subsequent success in being appointed
to the judiciary and rules committee. She recalls her
friendship with Sidney Marcus and admiration of Virginia
Sheppard. She recalls working on divorce legislation,
adoption legislation, and women's rights legislation.
Steinberg discusses running for the position of Public
Service Commissioner and the negative aspects of the
campaign Bobby Rowan ran against her. She recalls losing
and starting an advocacy business, subsequently running
for state senate and for Congress against John Linder.
Steinberg recalls being appointed the Consumer's
Insurance Advocate for the state, leaving public office,
and working with the Juvenile Justice Fund. Steinberg
comments on reapportionment and the state of party
politics in Georgia. She also recalls the circumstances
surrounding her once walking out of a national Equal
Rights Amendment America meeting.

Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne Co., Pennsylvania. Steinberg
received a bachelor's degree from the Carnegie-Mellon
Institute in 1964 and a master's degree in education
from the University of Pittsburgh in 1965. A Democrat,
she served in the Georgia General Assembly for sixteen
years in both the Georgia House of Representatives
(1977-1989) and in the Georgia Senate (1991-1993). She
is recognized as a strong advocate for women's rights.
She was the primary sponsor of the 1981-1982 Equal
Rights Amendment legislation. From 1993-1999, she was
the managing partner for Ahead of the Curve, a public
policy consulting and advocacy training firm. In 1999,
Governor Roy Barnes appointed Cathey Steinberg as
Georgia's first Consumer Insurance Advocate. She held
that position until 2003. Steinberg later served as the
executive director of the Juvenile Justice Fund, a
non-profit child advocacy organization based in Atlanta,
Georgia. She has been a consultant in public and
community relations and marketing and a frequent guest
speaker and lecturer.
