1. A brief history and Account of the Department
The Department was established in 1978, ten years after the inception of the
University. Prof. M.S. Menon, an eminent Sanskrit Scholar and well known critic in
Malayalam is the founder head of the Department. Acclaimed scholars like Prof. K.N.N.
Elayath (at present Director, Adayar Library and Research Centre, Adyar, Chennai), Prof.
N.V.P. Unithiri (former Principal Dean of studies, Sree Sankaracharya University of
Sanskrit, Kalady; Chairman, Cultural Publication Department, Government of Kerala)
and Prof. T.K. Narayanan, who served the University for a long time in the capacities of
Syndicate Member, Academic Staff College Director and the Registrar, were the
members of the faculty.
Within a short span of time the Department has registered
development. Now it is one of the major research & publication centers.
University Sanskrit Series, the Department has published 42 books.

The Department brings out an Indological Research Journal (annual) which is
named as Samskrtakairali.
The postgraduate programme has been so designed that the students get an in depth
knowledge in traditional and modern knowledge systems. The conceptual framework of the
syllabus is made broad so that the outgoing students can pursue higher studies in the subjects like
literary history, literary theory, comparative literature, Indian Philosophy, Textual criticism and
Indian scientific heritage.
Research Scholars are encouraged to take up topics from a wide range of research
fields like classical tradition, scientific literature in Sanskrit, literary criticism, grammar
and linguistics, fine arts and critical edition of rare works.
The
Department
has
been
collaborating
with
various
reputed
National/International Indological research centers and Universities. We have signed
MOU with acclaimed Universities of Europe. Regularly we organize seminars,
conferences and colloquia on pertinent research topics utilizing funds from institutions
like ICPR, UGC, Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, Kendra Sahitya Akkademi etc. And the
proceedings of such seminars and conferences are published.
To make the research works meaningful and relevant in the present day scheme of
things, interdisciplinary approach is wisely employed.

4. Brief account of the major activities during 2012: An international seminar on Vedic
Heritage of India: Contemporary Approaches was held on 08.02.2012 at seminar hall of
the department. Cezary Galewicz, Dr. T.B. Venugopalapanicker, Dr. C. Rajendran,
Dr. P. Narayanan Namboodiri, Dr. K.K. Geethakumary and Dr. N.K. Sundareswaran
presented various papers.
On 22.02.2012 3rd Prof. K.N.N. Elayath Endowment Lecture was held on the
topic of Poetic circuit: Indian Perspectives.
On 23rd February 2012 Kutiyattam performance and demonstration lecture was
held at E.M.S. Seminar Complex.
A national seminar was conducted on Aspects of Indian Logic on 21.03.2012 and
Prof. V. Ramakrishnabhatt, Prof. T. Aryadevi and Dr. E.M. Devan presented papers in
the seminar.
A newly launched programme named special lecture programme on the topic of
Bhuddist sources of Mahimabhatta’s language and philosophy was held on 27.03.2012 in
the department seminar hall.
26th M.S. Menon Endowment lecture was conducted on 27.03.2012 and Prof. K.P.
Mohanan delivered a talk on topic of Politics of foregrounding. Sanskrit Day
Celebrations were held on 21at and 22nd august 2012.
On 8th October 2012 an International lecture on topic of Landmark in the
development of vyakarana was delivered by Prof. Dr. Jan Emhoubn . On 9th October
2012 a one day seminar on the contribution of Vidwan C.S. Nair was conducted in the
seminar hall of the department.
A one day seminar on Literary theory: Problems and approaches was held on
10.10.2012.
Kalidasotsava celebrations were conducted on 6th & 7th November 2012. On 3rd
December 2012 an international lecture was delivered by Dr. Cezary Galewicz on Premodern classification of knowledge. On 11th & 12th December 2012.
7th Prof. N.V.P. Unithiri endowment all Kerala oriental conference was held at
the E.M.S. Seminar complex with various programmes.
