COURSE DESCRIPTION This course introduces the COBOL programmer to COBOL-based Web programming and application development. The student will use Merant/Micro Focus Net Express to create and enhance HTML input and output pages and write server-side COBOL CGI programs that include new and legacy code. Topics include: accessing and updating indexed files; using HTML controls such as check boxes, radio buttons, tables, selects, input images, and input buttons; using JavaScript functions for data validation, default values, and help screens; managing repeating data; enhancing HTML pages with images and hyperlinks; using events and event handlers, the same form for input and output, multiple output pages, and multiple submit buttons for multiple actions; maintaining state using hidden input, cookies, and server-side files; and querying relational databases using embedded SQL. The course will also provide overviews of relevant Web technologies. COURSE PREREQUISITE A first COBOL course (CPT 221 COBOL I) or COBOL programming experience. Helpful but not required will be: knowledge of indexed files and COBOL called subprograms (CPT 222), HTML (MCT 109/110/EIG 204/206), JavaScript (MCT 113), relational databases (MCT 235), SQL (CPT 118/223), interactive programming, client/server and Web theory, and Web site design.
