COURSE INFORMATION
Course Description:
This course covers advanced algebra topics which include: rational expressions; solving quadratic,
rational, radical and polynomial equations; relations and functions; quadratic and polynomial functions;
systems of equations and inequalities; exponential and logarithmic functions and matrices.
Course Prerequisites:
Successful completion of MATH 1310 with a grade of ”C” or better, or MCC Placement Test
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, each student will be able to:
1. Perform operations with rational expressions and rational exponents. Raise a binomial to a
power using binomial expansion.
2. Solve linear, quadratic, rational, radical equations and equations reducible to quadratic form.
Solve application problems using these types of equations. Solve linear, non-linear and
absolute-value inequalities.
3. Graph functions by plotting points, using symmetry and translations. Determine and graph
the inverse of a one-to-one function and write in standard form. Graph parabolas, circles,
ellipses and hyperbolas.
4. Locate the zeros and graph both polynomial and rational functions.
5. Graph exponential and logarithmic functions. Solve application problems requiring use of
exponential and logarithmic equations.
6. Solve a system of linear equations using an augmented matrix.

Required & Supplemental Materials:
Title:
College Algebra
Edition:
2nd Edition, Copyright 2009 (on campus)
Author:
Cynthia Young (on campus)
Publisher:
Wiley (on campus)
Materials:
Textbook, notebook and scientific calculator required. “Student Solutions
Manual”, optional.
SOFTWARE/FILE SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
Metropolitan Community College uses Microsoft products as part of its standard software and
encourages students to do the same. You may save word-processed documents for file
attachments in Microsoft Word .doc or .docx format. If your software does not allow either of
these, then save files in Rich Text Format (.rtf).
Class Structure:
The daily class period will consist of :
1. Review of material and questions from the previous class.
2. Presentation of new material.
3. Discussion of the lecture material.
4. In-class time for practice, quizzes and tests.
ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT WORK
Types of Assessment/Assignments:
Daily homework assignments are made for practice of the skills that need to be mastered. Homework
completed on paper with all necessary work shown in an organized manner will be awarded the same
points. Generally tests are scheduled upon completion of study of material on a specific concept or
course objective. Occasionally an interim quiz will be given and may not always be announced in
advance. All tests will be scheduled in advance. The Math Department requires that “a minimum of five
in class, closed-book, no notes exams, covering all the required objectives must be administered to the
students individually”.
Grading Policy:
Every test will be assigned a point value. At the end of the quarter, the total number of points correct will
be divided by the total number of points possible, converted to a percent and a grade for the course
assigned based on the following scale:
A = 90 – 100% of the possible points
B = 80 – 89%
C = 70 – 79%
D = 60 – 69%
F = Below 60%
A WX will be issued to students who have registered, but do not attend class during the first 1days. An FX will be issued to students who fail the course due to poor attendance.
A 10% penalty will be assessed on any test not taken during the scheduled testing period unless
arrangements have been made to make-up the test PRIOR to the scheduled testing period. If a test
is missed without the mentioned prior arrangements, notify the instructor immediately to make-up the
penalized test. Make-up tests must be completed within one week of the original test date or zero points
will be assigned for that test. An average of 60% must be obtained on the tests and the last quiz in order
to receive a C or higher in the course.

Maintenance of Student Records:
Generally graded tests will be returned to the students during one of the next two class periods. Graded
tests will be kept on file in the instructor’s office to facilitate the Course Grade Appeal Procedure.
ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT LEARNING PROGRAM:
Metropolitan Community College is committed to continuous improvement of teaching and
learning. You may be asked to help us to accomplish this objective. For example, you may be
asked to respond to surveys or questionnaires. In other cases, tests or assignments you are
required to do for this course may be shared with faculty and used for assessment purposes.
USE OF STUDENT WORK:
By enrolling in classes offered by Metropolitan Community College, the student gives the
College license to mark on, modify, and retain the work as may be required by the process of
instruction, as described in the course syllabus. The institution shall not have the right to use the
work in any other manner without the written consent of the student(s).
INSTRUCTOR’S EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS
A WX is issued to students who do not attend class.
An F is issued to students who fail the course. (Average below 60%.)
An FX is issued to students who fail the course because of excessive absence.
Common courtesy is expected during class time which includes the silencing and non-use of all personal
electronic devices excluding the scientific calculator.
