COURSE DESCRIPTION
An enriched, accelerated program in composition and American literature, designed for
the highly capable and motivated sophomore student. EN 35 Honors takes the place of
EN 471.
GOALS
Develop a solid understanding of American literature and culture
Read critically and analytically
Listen with purpose
Write and speak with clarity, purpose, thoughtfulness, and style
Expand vocabulary
Work cooperatively with others

Building an Enriched Vocabulary (Joseph R. Orgel, Ph.D)
Various newspaper articles; novels of choice from a provided list

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Mark Twain)

PROCEDURES
ALL WORK IS DUE ON THE DUE DATE. EXCEPTIONS FOR LATE WORK MAY
BE MADE FOR MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS (50 points and up) WITH REDUCED
CREDIT (automatic 10%).
Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated. Anyone caught copying or giving their
work will receive a zero for the assignment or test and a discipline referral.
Essays will be in MLA format. They will be typed, double-spaced, 12 pt. font, Times
New Roman; 1 in. margins, submitted through Google Drive or hard copy (either needs
to have turnitin.com approval); class work will be neatly written. Please use loose leaf
paper.
All essays should have a modified MLA heading in the upper left corner of the paper:

ATTENDANCE
BE HERE!! Four tardies = referral. If you have more than 9 absences, you may lose your
credit.
Excessive tardiness will result in Saturday school.
If you have an excused absence, look at the assignment calendar, website calendar, check
with a friend, or speak with me after class. It is your responsibility to make up work. You
have 2 days for every day absent to complete make up work. If you miss a test, you will
need to make it up during lunch or after school.
GRADING
Points will be earned on class work, homework, tests, essays, vocabulary, projects, and
public speaking.
