Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to Dobson High School Choral Music Studies! Our goal is
to teach each student all that we can about music, and help him or
her to become the finest and most knowledgeable performer
possible. Students who always make their best effort, will experience
much success here. The study of music is both very rewarding and a
lot of fun. The purpose of this handbook is to explain how we are
going to help each student find those rewards and discover the joy of
music.
Please take the time to read through this handbook, as it will provide
important information regarding the Dobson Choral Organizations.
After the material has been read, sign the documents, which are
inserted in the handbook and return them within the first week of
school.
I hope you will enjoy your musical studies here. If you ever have any
questions, please do not hesitate to ask!

Mr. Carpenter’s Biography
RON CARPENTER, the Director of Choirs at Dobson High School,
is a native of Arizona. He began his musical training as a child in
the Phoenix Boys Choir and was fortunate to be a student of Bart
Evans right here at Dobson. He studied Conducting with Dr. JoMichael Scheibe at Northern Arizona University where he earned a
Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Educational
Administration.
Mr. Carpenter taught choral music in kindergarten through twelfth
grade in the Gilbert School District from 1990 to 1993. From 1993
to 2011 he taught choral music at Hendrix and Poston Junior High
Schools in the Mesa School District. In 2011 he was appointed

Director of Choirs at Dobson High School. Mr. Carpenter began
conducting the Phoenix Children’s Chorus Concert Choir in 1993
and has been their Artistic Director since 2000. In addition, he was
a faculty member of the University of Miami Annual Summer Choral
Camp in Choral Gables Florida for seven years. He has served as
a clinician for choirs in Arizona, California, Nevada and Florida.
All students must return the Dobson Orpheus Society membership
form no later than Friday, August 16, 2013 whether parents have
decided to join or not.
Dobson Choir Council
Mr. Carpenter will choose a council through an application process
who will work closely with him to fulfill leadership tasks outlined in the
Dobson Choral Studies Constitution.
Dobson Orpheus Society
(Parent Advocacy Group)
What is the Orpheus Society?
The Dobson High School Orpheus Society was established in 1990
to provide a mechanism for parental involvement in the Dobson High
School vocal music program on a more formalized basis. Much like
nature appreciated the beauty of Orpheus’ music, the Orpheus
Society provides a mechanism for expression of appreciation to
Dobson’s group of talented young vocalists. The group is made up
of parents, relatives, neighbors and friends of students in the Dobson
Choral program.
Students serving on the Dobson Choir Council will meet with Mr.
Carpenter on a weekly basis and must be willing to complete tasks
outside of class time. Serving in a leadership position on the Dobson
Choir Council is a great way to get involved in a meaningful activity
and make a difference.
Because the Orpheus Society believes that music education in the
public schools is essential, the Society seeks to support, promote
and encourage the advancement of vocal music education at Dobson
High School.
On a more practical level, the Dobson High School Orpheus Society
assists with concert mechanics (programs, tickets, ushering, etc),
fund raising activities, and support for the Choral Music Program of
the high school in any and every way.
How Can I Help?
You can help by becoming a member of the Orpheus Society!
Membership is open to anyone, regardless of age, residence or vocal
ability! All it takes is the desire to support and encourage excellence
in the Choral Music Program at Dobson High School. Membership
dues are $10 annually and coincide with the school year. Anyone
can support Choral Music at Dobson simply by completing the
membership form attached to the back of this handbook and
returning it to Dobson along with a check made out to DHS Orpheus
Society in the amount of $10. An organizational meeting will be held
during the first month of school. Please plan to attend and get
involved with this dynamic organization that supports choral music at
Dobson.
You’ll find many ways to become involved with the organization.
Parents are always needed for things like uniform distribution, stage
decoration or perhaps ushering at a concert or assisting with a
fundraiser. Maybe you would like to chaperone one of the choir trips
or help with desktop publishing of our concert programs or
department brochures.
Whatever your interest, there is a
corresponding need.
Dobson High School Performing Arts:
Program of Study
District Subject Area Goal and Essential Skills:
Students will acquire the essential components of music by
participating in an environment, which consistently promotes growth
in performing, valuing, and identifying music as a meaningful part of
their education. The successful student will:
•
•
•
•
•
Participate in music activities, alone and with others.
Improvise and create music.
Use the vocabulary and notation of music.
Respond to music aesthetically, intellectually, and
emotionally.
Recognize and describe the relationships between music and
other curricular areas.
Goal of the Dobson High School Choirs:
The goal of all the choral music classes at Dobson High School is to
heighten each student’s aesthetic awareness through the art of
choral music. While there are many ancillary goals that are also set,
the ability to use vocal sound as a means to communicate the
feelings embodied in a musical work is always the ultimate focus.
This uniquely human ability requires dedication and maturity to
develop. Dedication because the skills needed to recreate music are
both numerous and complex. Maturity because, once the technical
skills are learned, a musician must be patient and open minded in

order to understand and then communicate the essence of a
composer’s work. Many adults live their entire lives without being
aware of the power that art has to effect them. High school age
students are not too young to begin delving into the meaning of
music as an art form. There is no better way to do that than to
develop the ability to perform—to take the creation of an artist and
bring it to life.
The music educator is charged with the task of helping students
develop the musical skills necessary to recreate meaningful music
and to listen critically to others as they perform. It is important to
teach that it is not enough to like or dislike a particular work or
rendition—one must be able to both articulate the reasons for his or
her opinion and demonstrate an alternative. Criticism that is not
supportable and constructive will not and should not be taken
seriously by others.
Dobson Choirs General Curriculum:
Vocal Technique
•
Musicianship
•
•
It would be naïve to suggest that here at Dobson it is possible for
every student to fully accomplish these lofty goals. However it is
possible to start young people down a path that will eventually lead to
aesthetic awareness. A person who is aesthetically aware will be
better able to reap all that life has to offer and to share with others
the wealth of his or her talent.
•
Purpose of Dobson Choirs:
•
•
•

•
•
•
•

Grading Policy
Grades can be viewed on line and are updated weekly through the
district website at: http://www.mpsaz.org/mymps. In addition,
progress reports are sent out approximately every three to four
weeks. If there are any questions for specific grade progress, please
contact the choral office.
Student official transcripts will list semester grades only. Therefore,

the percentage grade a student receives in the first and third quarter
will carry into the second and fourth quarter. A student will not start
from a clean slate until the beginning of a new semester. Missed
assignments/tests are the sole responsibility of the student and can
be made up until one week prior to the end of the grading quarter.
Concerts and participation cannot be made up.
student has six absences, he/she will be contacted by a school
official in order to review the attendance policy and potential denial of
credit. Furthermore, if a student demonstrates a pattern of
unexcused absences or “inconsistent” absences, he/she may lose
the privilege of performance for an upcoming event, as deemed
appropriate by the director.
At the end of each grading period, all grades earned will be averaged
to arrive at the basic grade. If a student has no unexcused absences
from any performances, he or she will receive the basic grade on the
report card. If he or she does have an unexcused absence, the basic
grade will be lowered in accordance with the policy described under
Performance Grade.
IMPORTANT... PLEASE NOTE... Attendance is required to all
performances. Appeals for unique and rare circumstances need to
be submitted in writing to the director at least two weeks prior to the
date of the performance in order to be considered as an excused
absence (see Performance Grade). Emergency absences must be
discussed with the director within one school day of a missed
performance. A student must have verifiable evidence to support
his/her emergency situation or an excused absence may not be
granted.
Three types of grades are earned in choir:
1. Performance 2. Tests/Quizzes 3. Participation
Each type of grade is explained below.
A complete listing of daily bell schedules can be found at:
http://www.mpsaz.org/dobson/staff/skshepple/bells/
Performance Grade
A PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE can be found in on page 9 of this
handbook. Each student should review this schedule with his or her
parents and put the dates on his or her family and personal calendar
so that no conflicts arise. If an unavoidable conflict does come up,
the student must notify the director with a note from his or her
parents at least two weeks prior to the performance date. The note
must describe the specific reason for the absence so that the director
can determine if he or she may be excused. Two week’s notice will
give the choir ample time to rehearse without the student for the
performance. A note asking to excuse a student from a performance
less than two weeks prior to a performance, or after the fact, cannot
be accepted.
Below are the requirements for performance grades:
A- Arrive on time for the warm-up, dressed appropriately
(see Performance Attire), demonstrate appropriate
concert etiquette both on stage and in the
audience, and stay with the choir for the entire
performance.
C- Fulfill all but one of the requirements for an “A”.
D- Fulfill all but two of the requirements for an “A”.
F- Fail to fulfill three of the requirements for an “A”.
Tests and Quizzes Grade
Choral students will have written music theory quizzes approximately
every 1-2 weeks, usually on a Friday. These quizzes will cover the
music theory concepts taught during class and will be an average of
10 questions. We are dedicated to making sure that each student
truly understands the content being taught in class. Therefore, every
choral student will be expected to demonstrate mastery of the
material taught by earning 100% on the written quizzes. Students
may retake written quizzes as many times as necessary until one
week prior to the end of the grading quarter. Retakes may be done
before or after school, at lunch or during conference time by
appointment. Students may be required by the director to attend an
extra help session during conference if the director deems it
necessary to master a concept. Students may also see their director
to schedule a time to receive extra help.
Participation Grade
An unexcused absence from any performance, including
performances not yet scheduled, will result in a GRADE of “F” for that
performance. The final grade for that grading period will also be
lowered two letter grades. Also, the student may be required to
attend a conference with the director and an administrator to
reevaluate his or her participation in a musical performing group.
Attendance to Class and Performance Events
It is important to recognize the direct relationship that exists between
attendance and academic achievement. Attendance is ultimately the
responsibility of the student and his/her parent(s) or guardian(s). If a
Students will earn a weekly participation grade for participation in
daily rehearsals. Daily participation is very important in choir since
the actions of one person have an impact on everyone else in the
ensemble. Students will earn an A for arriving on time to rehearsal
with their materials and contributing to the ensemble in a positive
manner. A student’s grade will be lowered for being tardy to class,
not having his or her materials, not following directions, arguing with
the director, being disruptive, or otherwise not contributing to the
success of the rehearsal.
Extra Help
Students may come in before or after school for EXTRA HELP on an
individual basis if they are having difficulty with any of the music or
concepts being covered in class. Students also may be asked to
come in before or after school, at lunch or during conference time for
extra help if a concept has not been mastered. Mr. Carpenter is

more than willing to help when asked. However, he won’t know a
student needs help unless asked. Students should always make an
appointment with Mr. Carpenter before coming in to make sure he is
available. He will be glad to help with any special music or audition
materials on which students may be working.
Private Lessons
Nothing can take the place of individualized, expert attention and
guidance. PRIVATE LESSONS greatly increase the chance for
students to participate in activities such as High School Regional
Choir and All-State Choir. Students should also consider private
piano lessons. Keyboard skills can help students to become much
better musicians in a relatively short period of time. Anyone
interested in finding a private voice or piano teacher should speak
with Mr. Carpenter and he would be happy to recommend someone.
Rehearsal Behavior Expectations:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Performing Arts Building Behavior Expectations:
•
Rehearsal Routine
•
•
Establishing a Normal Rehearsal Routine is important because it
allows daily rehearsal time to be used efficiently. The routine begins
as the students enter the room.
•
Immediately upon entering the room, students should get their music
folder from the music folder cabinet and go directly to their assigned
seats. Students are expected to be in their assigned seats when the
tardy bell rings. Everyday, without exception, class will begin when
the tardy bell rings.
Every class period will begin with vocal warm-ups that are related to
the music we will be singing that period. Next there will be a sight
reading exercise and/or a music reading lesson. The choir will
rehearse for the remainder of the period.
During a rehearsal, there will be times when the director is working
with a section other than your own. Students are expected to “score
study” during these times.
The class will be dismissed by the director (not the bell) when:
• The room has been returned to its original state of order.
• All the students are sitting quietly in their assigned seats.
•The director has made any necessary announcements.
Behavior Expectations
•
No food, drinks, or gum in the choir room, auditorium,
hallways, practice rooms, and general rehearsal room areas.
Be respectful of all school and personal property.
Use appropriate language on school property or while
representing Dobson High School.
Students are only permitted to play the piano or other
instruments with permission.
Appropriate behavior is expected while in the performing arts
building; no running or horseplay.
Concert Behavior Expectations:
•
•
•
•
•
•
The primary responsibility in choir is to learn about music. Any
behavior that distracts from or interferes with the learning process is
unacceptable. As such, corrective measures will be taken to achieve
appropriate behavior. Corrective measures will first take the form of
a conference between the student and the director. If unacceptable
behavior persists, the director will pursue further means of action and
notify the student’s parents. Ultimately, a student may be transferred
to another class where appropriate behavior can be more easily
achieved. In addition to the expectations outlined in the choir
handbook, all Dobson High School Handbook rules and district
guidelines also apply.
Be early to rehearsals. Be in your seat when the tardy bell
rings.
Be prepared with music, sight singing materials, and pencil.
The most preferred form of communication is listening. The
least effective form of communication is talking.
Be respectful and helpful to each other.
Engage in a positive attitude during rehearsals and you
normally get positive results.
When you focus on the task at hand, behavior issues become
minimal.
Students are required to attend the entire concert. Most
concert performances will not be more than one and one half
hours.
Students are instructed to observe all portions of the concert.
When they are not featured on stage, they are seated in a
reserved section in the auditorium.
Students will be well mannered, completely silent during
performances, are not permitted to use cell phones, and will
follow appropriate concert etiquette.
Students will be in complete and proper uniform attire when
they arrive at the designated “call time” and will not add to or
take away from the uniform at any time before, during, or
after the concert until he/she is at home.
Students will keep concert attire, including shoes, clean and
presentable. Uniforms, including shirts, will be cleaned and
pressed.
Students will demonstrate class and professionalism while
hosting performance events.
Traveling Behavior Expectations:
Appropriate behavior is simply a matter of adhering to the School and
District Codes of Conduct. Failure to behave in the proper manner is
possible grounds for sending a student home at his/her own
expense. The following are overall expectations of conduct:
•
•
•
Latest Revision, August, 2015
Be responsible for yourself.
Always know what the expectations are.
Treat all chaperones and adults with the utmost respect.
6
Dobson High School Choir Handbook
•
•
•
Every request made by a chaperone must be adhered to in a
timely and courteous manner.
Never go anywhere alone and never go anywhere you
shouldn’t be.
All students are expected to ride district transportation to and
from events. Any exceptions need to be cleared in writing
PRIOR to the event.
Whining/complaining is usually not good form. Be flexible and
smile as much as possible.
Buses / Motor Coaches Behavior Expectations:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Be respectful of others and use quite voices while traveling.
Singing is NEVER allowed on the bus/coach unless lead by a
director.
Treat your drivers with respect. Simple words such as
“please” and “thank you” are appreciated and expected.
Remain seated while the bus is in motion.
For safety and attendance purposes, stay on the same bus
while traveling.
Food and drink will only be allowed on the buses at the
discretion of the bus drivers. However, keep in mind that
food and drink is almost always not permitted while in
uniform.
Keep a clean environment and pick up after yourself. Make
sure that all drinks are confined or have a lid.
Finally, when in doubt regarding appropriate behavior, make
decisions that will reflect the highest level of character and
integrity.
Fast Food Stops or At Restaurants Behavior Expectations:
•
•
•
•
Always be considerate of other paying patrons and use quiet
voices during conversation.
Playing with your food or with utensils/condiments is
inappropriate. Please enjoy yourself, but be on your best
behavior.
Treating your waiter/waitress with respect is always
appreciated.
Finally, when in doubt regarding appropriate behavior, make
decisions that will reflect the highest level of character and
integrity.

STUDENT DRIVING/RIDING IN PRIVATE VEHICLE
A.
When District transportation is not provided for student travel, District Policy IICA permits students to drive or ride in private vehicles
arranged for by a school employee to and/or from school related activities, if the student's parent/guardian gives written permission.
B.
When District transportation is provided or private vehicle is arranged for by a school employee the parent/guardian may instead drive the
student, allow the student to drive, or allow the student to drive another student or to ride with another student if permission is indicated below.
Where transportation is provided by a student or an adult in lieu of transportation provided for or arranged by the district, the district has no
responsibility for the conduct of the driver/vehicle and no responsibility for ensuring that the driver of the vehicle has proper license and insurance.
FAILURE TO GIVE PERMISSION RESTRICTS THE STUDENT TO TRANSPORTATION PROVIDED FOR OR ARRANGED BY THE SCHOOL.
