SC49: BIOLOGY – SUMMER SCHOOL CLASS INFORMATION & SYLLABUS Ms. Finzer Biology hfinzer@mpsaz.org – email Preferred communication method http://www.mpsaz.org/dobson/staff/hxfinzer/summer_school/ MATERIALS Biology Textbook is to be kept at home until the end of the summer. GRADING Students will be required to bring the following materials to class every day: 1. Notebook – A 1” inch binder 2. Pencil (sharpened, with an eraser) and Black or Blue Pen 3. 8 ½” x 11” college ruled lined paper 4. Highlighters A total point system will be utilized with the total points earned being placed on a 10% scale as follows: % Average Notebook – 15% 90-100 = A Quizzes – 20% 80-89 = B Tests – 50% 70-79 = C Project – 15% 60-69 = D 0-59 = F (no credit) Extra Credit Extra Credit will be just that: EXTRA, not “instead of” credit. Be sure to do the assigned work so that you may earn extra credit when it’s available. All students should take advantage of this. Tests/Quizzes Almost every activity will be followed by a quiz. There will be at least one major test for each unit. Missed quizzes cannot be made up. Don’t fear: I drop 1 in 4 quizzes. The missed quiz can may be dropped and not affect your grade provided you didn’t miss too many. Tests due to an excused absence are to be made up the day of your return to school. * Students who are tardy on the day of a quiz cannot make up the quiz. No exceptions. Notebook The notebook is a portfolio of the student’s work. All work except tests and quizzes will be done in the notebook. It includes notes, lab work, textbook work, and worksheets. The notebook is a portfolio of the work you have completed in Biology and Ms. Finzer will do 1 notebook check during the summer to see if you are keeping the notebook together. ABSENCES After any absence, it is the student’s responsibility to: 1. Find out what was missed. 2. Obtain any missed assignments. 3. All notes are posted on my webpage. We will not have time for students to copy the notes in class. There will be note quizzes after each break. Being tardy prevents you from taking the missed quiz. 4. Extra credit that was missed cannot be made up, for any reason. 5. Any time you don’t understand or are unsure, talk with Ms. Finzer ASAP! Schedule a time to meet for help. 6. Remember this is summer school – we are limited in time so your attendance is imperative to passing this class. TARDY POLICY When the bell rings, class has begun and the teacher needs to begin. If you are not IN YOUR SEAT and PREPARED TO START, you will not be permitted to take the bell quiz. CLASS RULES See Mesa Public Schools Rules and Policy handout. POSSIBLE 1. Warning (warnings are given on the first day for technology and CONSEQUENCES dress code.) 2. Removal from the classroom. 3. Parent contact. 4. Referral to vice principal. 5. Placement on behavior contract. Breaking the contract will result in removal from the class or school and a loss of credit. TECHNOLOGY Cell phones and their use will not be permitted in the classroom. If a student needs the use of a calculator, then students are to use a calculator, not their cell phone. If the teacher knows you are using your cell phone or any other piece of technology, it will be confiscated immediately. If you are caught using your cell phone during an assignment or quiz/test, you will receive a “0” on that assignment and receive a referral to school administration and possible loss of class credit may result. Parents who need to get in touch with a student in case of emergency must contact the appropriate attendance clerk in order to send a message to their son/daughter, and are asked not to call or text their student while classes are in progress. STUDENT DRESS CD players, MP3, iPods, etc., are not permitted in the classroom and are to be kept in a backpack or purse. The school’s dress code will be enforced as a learning experience of how to dress appropriately for specific environments.
