PH YSICAL EDUCATIO N NEWSLETTER Michael Potter Clint Treadway HIGHLAND HURRICANES Welcome to an exciting year of PHYSICAL EDUCATION at Highland Elementary School! We are really enthusiastic to work with your children and are looking forward to a great year!! Our curriculum is a district-wide program which allows children to achieve and progress at their own rate and to develop physically through a wide variety of activities. Skills are taught in a logical, sequential order, simple to complex, to allow for a successful learning experience. The focus is on personal goals rather than comparing one another. Our goal is to develop positive attitudes towards activity for a lifetime of enjoyment. All grades attend P.E. twice a week for 30 minutes. All grade levels participate in lessons which are divided in the following manner: INTRO (2-3 MINUTES)- to prepare the body for strenuous activity. FITNESS (7-8 MINUTES)- to develop physical fitness, i.e., strength, cardiovascular, flexibility. LESSON FOCUS (12-15 MINUTES)- heart of the lesson; basic movement principles, basic sport skills, etc. GAME (5-7 MINUTES)to apply skills covered in the lesson or simply just to have fun. We encourage your child to wear comfortable clothing and they must wear tennis shoes on P.E. days! Sandals or shoes with heels or without backs are potentially dangerous during activity. Girls should wear shorts under dresses, etc. Hats and sunglasses are allowed outside. If it is necessary for your child to be excused from P.E., please send a note. THE DAYS YOUR CHILD HAS P.E.
