3rd Quarter Project
Due: March 11th
Enter the Newsroom: You are now all journalists
from either the Byzantine, Islamic, French, or
English civilizations during the late Middle Ages
and Crusades. Your job is to report on the news of
the empire.
Directions: Working by yourself or in groups of your choosing of up to
three, create either a Newspaper or a News Broadcast (video) explaining
the times and events of the empire.
Newspaper: The more people that are in the group the longer
and more refined I expect the newspaper to be (figure 4 articles
per person). Be creative – draw political cartoons, make up
some stories that are reflective of the times, use humor etc. If
you are unsure if something is appropriate ask me first before
putting it in your work. As always, make sure there is a
bibliography to your work showing me where you obtained any
of your information. Put it all together in an attractive fashion –
You should not judge a book by its cover but a newspaper is fair
game!
Things you may want to include:
 Top stories about current events
 Political cartoons
 Puzzles (crosswords/jumbles/word-search)
 Fake movie/game reviews that display the mood of the
region and time period
 Fake sports highlights or scores
 Fake stories about certain trends –Fashion- Hollywood etc.
 Check out a real newspaper for some ideas
 Anything else you can think of! Put yourself in that time
period and then get creative. It should be fun. I am not
looking for 100% facts but that you understand the mood
of the time period and the civilization. However, the true
news stories should be factual.
News Broadcast:
The more people that are in the group the
longer and more refined I expect the news broadcast to be (figure 4
“news reports” per person). The news broadcast can be either
performed in front of the class or submitted to me on a CD on video. You
need to have a script. If performing in front of the class I need the
script ahead of time. The script should have an attached bibliography. I
expect you to be very prepared – that means know your lines.
Things you may want to include:
 Top stories about current events
 Fake movie/game reviews that display the mood of the
region and time period
 Fake sports highlights or scores
 Fake stories about certain trends –Fashion- Hollywood
etc.
 An investigative reporter exposing some kind of scandal
 Commercials?
 Weather?
 Watch a news broadcast for some ideas
 Don’t Forget- YOU NEED A SCRIPT w/ a bibliography
 Anything else you can think of! Put yourself in that time
period and then get creative. It should be fun. I am not
looking for 100% facts but that you understand the
mood of the time period and the civilization. However,
the true news stories should be factual.
How will you be graded?
 Effort (does it look like time was put into this project)
 Refinement (Do the news casters know their lines? Are there a lot of typo’s in the
newspaper? Etc.)
 Creativity (does your project have something unique about it?)
 Facts (there should be some real news stories in the newspaper/broadcast – how does your
project tell the truth?)
