Portraits of Jesus
Messiah –
– The word “Christ” is the Greek form of the Hebrew title “the Messiah.”
– “Messiah” means “anointed one”.
– In the Old Testament, anointing w/ oil was regarded as having been
chosen by God. Who anointed Jesus w/ oil?
– Mark 14: 61 – 62 – The only place where Jesus directly states he is the
Messiah.
Lord –
– In the Old Testament the Jewish community used the word Lord for God.
No one else was addressed with this title, since it would elevate one to
divine status.
– John 11:21 – Martha addresses Jesus as “Lord”.
– Romans 10:9; 1 Cor. 12:3 – “Jesus is Lord.” Regarded by Paul as
essential feature of the Gospel.
Son of God –
– In the Old Testament this term used to refer to angelic or supernatural
persons. (Job 38:7; Daniel 3:25)
– Messianic texts in the Old Testament refers to the coming Messiah as the
“Son of God”. (2 Samuel 7: 12 – 14; Psalm 2:7)
– Jesus calls God “Abba” – Father. (Mark 14:36;Matt 6:9; Luke 23: 34, 46)
– Father – Son Relationship (John 5: 16 – 27; 17: 1 – 26)
Son of Man –
– Affirmation of the humanity of Christ.
– The term “Son of Man” is used in the Gospel to refer to a future judge,
who will come in glory @ the end of time.
– Numbers 23:19 & Psalm 8:14 – Relates to the humanity of Jesus.
– Book of Daniel – Vision of future judgment. He refers to someone as the
“Son of Man” coming to judge the world.
