Positive space is the area taken up by the subject matter. Negative space is the space around the subject matter. What is a trade card? Trade Cards were the ancestors of trading cards. They were exchanged in social circles, that businesses would distribute to clients and potential customers. A trade card is an early example of a business card. Some businesses began to create increasingly sophisticated designs, especially with the development of color printing. As they became more attractive, collecting trade cards became a popular hobby in the late 19th Century.
