Sherwood Anderson once said, "a boy wants something very special from his father.
You hear it said that fathers want their sons to be what they feel they themselves cannot be,
but I tell you it also works the other way.” In other words, fathers and sons have expectations
for each other and are disappointed when these expectations are not met. In Arthur Miller's
Death of a Salesman, Willy wants Biff to live the dream that Willy has for him and becomes
angry when Biff fails to live up to that dream. Meanwhile, Biff wants to receive support from a
father that he can admire and is frustrated when Willy does not provide what he needs.
