Required Works
Literature: Reading Fiction, Poetry, and Drama
Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare is online, but not in the textbook. You must get a copy to bring to class.
You can use an electronic text in class (Kindle, IPad, etc), but cannot use your phone.
Additional plays that are not available in the textbook may be added.
Class Requirements
· Students should be in their assigned seats and ready to work when the bell rings. Unexcused lateness will lower the class work
grade and after the third late, the student will receive detention.
· Students must bring the required book(s) for the day, a notebook, a folder containing class handouts, a pen, and a pencil to class
every day. Students must have these materials with them at the start of class. Students must be in dress code. Lack of preparation
will result in a lower grade.
· Students must be respectful. No talking when someone else is speaking or during Channel One. Students should not have cell
phones, mp3 players, make-up, snacks, etc. in class. Backpacks/purses must be kept under the desk.
· Students are expected to follow the school’s Honor Code policy. Students caught cheating, copying homework, or plagiarizing
(whether they have copied the work themselves or supplied another student with their work to copy) will receive a zero for the
assignment and an honor code violation.
· Students and parents/guardians should make sure that St. Francis Prep has an accurate and up-to-date email address on file.
· All students must set up an account on the St. Francis Prep website and be able to access the online class forum.
Grading
Grades will be based on written assignments, tests, quizzes, projects, and class participation. All exams will be announced before the
test date, while quizzes may or may not be announced. Class participation will be taken into consideration at grading time and may
offer the addition of 1-3 extra credit points per quarter. There will be no extra credit assignments.
Students will receive a class work grade worth 50 points for the quarter. This grade includes small in-class writing assignments,
which are to be shared with the class. Lateness, unpreparedness, failure to complete written assignments, and inappropriate
classroom behavior will result in a deduction of points from this grade (5 points per offense). Repeated offenses may result in
disciplinary action. Should a student cut class, the class work grade will automatically drop to a zero.
Students and parents/guardians should check Portal to monitor student progress. If you are unable to access Parent Portal and need
a printed copy of a student's Mid Quarter grades, send me a request through email.
Approximate Point Values:
Writing Assignments: 50-100 points
Class Work: 50 points
Projects: 25-50 points
Tests: 50-100 points
Quizzes: 10-25 points
Homework: 10 points
Late work
Assignments must be turned in at the beginning of class on the day they are due. Assignments sent through email after class will be
considered late. Assignments sent through email or left in my mailbox do not always reach me, and it is the student’s responsibility
to hand me a hard copy of all assignments. Late assignments will lose one letter grade per day (NOT per class day. An assignment
due on Friday, but turned in on Monday will be counted as 3 days late).
Absences
Assignments due during an absence must be turned in upon return to class. It is the student’s responsibility to check the class
website, contact a classmate to obtain missed class notes/assignments, and to approach me to arrange to make up tests/quizzes.
Students must make up scheduled tests/quizzes within two days of their return to school. Tests/quizzes that are not made up in the
required time will receive a zero. If a student misses a pop quiz, the next one will count twice. Work that is missed due to unexcused
lateness or cuts will be given a 30% penalty (the highest grade possible for that assignment is a 70%).
Write down the email addresses and phone numbers of at least two classmates.
The class website will be updated regularly and contain class announcements, assignments, and reading schedules.
Because students who miss class are expected to check the website and contact a classmate in order to be aware of upcoming
quizzes and reading assignment due dates, they will be required to take any tests/quizzes that are scheduled for the day they return
to class (including pop quizzes on reading assignments). Links to online texts of reading assignments are available on the class
website. Save these links in case the school website is down.
*All students must create a Turnitin account and a Google Docs account.
***You can obtain college credit for your work in this course.
