CATEGORY 1: WHO PUT THE “GLAD” IN “GLADIATOR”? 1. You will find me in gallery 155. I am from Ancient Greece, circa 530 B.C. I am black, but those who are painted onto me are reddish in color. You can walk around me, and see me from 360 degrees. I tell a story, and the story can be seen on both sides of me. On one side, I depict three figures. The man between the satyr and the maenad holding the large goblet and wearing a toga is Dionysos, the god of wine. The other side shows two men fighting for the Delphic tripod. One is bearded and in the nude wielding a weapon over his head. What is his name? ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ 2. You will find me in gallery 162. Although I am a character from Greek mythology, this rendering of me comes from Ancient Rome, from the 1st Century A.D. I am, however, copied from a Greek statue that was attributed to Lysippos. This time, you will see only my bust. My beard and hair are full of curls that look soft to the touch, although I am made from marble and, in fact, am classified as a stone sculpture. Normally, I appear to be strong and powerful, but this time I appear to be quiet tired from completing my twelve labors, and in fact, my head is turned to my left, and is slightly facing down in exhaustion. A hero’s work is never done! ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ 3. You will find me in gallery 162. I am a familiar Greek hero, but once again, I was created in this form by the Romans in roughly 69-96 A.D. Like the rendering of me found in Clue # 2, I am made from marble, and may be classified as a stone sculpture. This time, I appear in full form, but much younger then other representations you will have seen of me today. My right arm conceals a club behind my back - the same club I might have raised above my head in the Clue #1. My left arm casually has a lion skin draped over it. I stand in contrapposto, between two columns, looking slightly to the right. ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ 4. You will find me in gallery 162. I am another Roman copy of a Greek original sculpture, and I am an older version of the hero you have seen earlier. I am also made from marble, as I was in Clues # 2 and # 3, and classified as a stone sculpture. Like Clue # 3, I am also standing in contropposto, but it is very difficult for anybody to know for sure what I was doing with my arms when I was created. I have a long, curly beard, but most of the curls atop my head are covered by a hood made from the mouth of a beast. A cloak may have once hung from my shoulders, but now all that remains is the skin of an animal tied around my neck, the paws dangling across my chest. Like the rendering of me in Clue # 2, I also look to the right. ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ 5. You will find me in gallery 604. I am a tempera painting on wood, embossed and gilt ornamented, painted by an unnamed Italian painter in the second quarter of the 15th century. This work depicts Hercules completing three of his twelve labors - slaying the Nemean lion, combating the centaurs and one other. Surrounding the circular images, on the front of a chest, are gold embossed putti (little angels). What is the third depicted trial that Hercules is facing? (hint: it should say it in the gallery label). ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ 6. BONUS QUESTION: Tate Donavan provided the voice for Hercules in the 1997 Disney animated film “Hercules”. He also played the father to Mischa Barton’s Marissa Cooper on what 2003 television series? ______________________________________________________
