THE EXCITED STATE Skill- TO RECOGNISE THE EXCITED STATE YOU MUST: Count the electrons on the given configuration of the neutral element, this equals the atomic number. Identify the element from the atomic number. Compare the periodic table configuration to the configuration given; if there are skipped or empty orbitals or sublevels but the number of electrons is the same, it is an excited state. To propose your own excited state, simply promote an electron to a higher energy level that would be unoccupied in the ground state. EXAMPLE #1 ASSESS THE CONFIGRATIONS: 1s1↑ 2s2 ↑↓ 2p6 ↑↓ ↑↓ ↑↓ 3s1↑ NOTE :there are 10 electrons, atomic number is 10 therefore it is neon EXCITED. 1-8-1 NOT GROUND. 1s ↑↓ 2s ↑↓ 2p ↑↓ ↑↓ ↑↓ 2 2 6 NOTE :there are 10 electrons, atomic number is 10 therefore it is neon GROUND, AS IN PERIODIC TABLE 2-8 (10 ELECTRONS)
