Newsletter Mrs. Chung-Wipff English A November 12, 2015 Dear Parents and Guardians, My plan this year was to simplify communications with all the parents in my classrooms and utilize Synergy, the district’s gradebook and communications system to create newsletters. Due to an upgrade, the communications system has been down and I have been unable to send you electronic newsletters. So I’ve decided to publish them here. Please check in every two weeks for updates. We have been working diligently on vocabulary, literary studies, argumentative writing and BBI’s (Boring But Important = Daily Language Review). Both the 5th and 6th grade classes bring enthusiasm and a sense of fun to class each day! Thank you for your support and direction at home. 5th Grade has just started reading a historical novel by Elizabeth George Speare, The Sign of The Beaver, story set in the 1700s. This is an excellent literary connection to our social studies research on settlers and natives. Most of our vocabulary for the next 6 weeks will come from the book. For chapter 8 (Slavery) in the History Alive book, students will have a choice between creating a diorama and writing a research paper. Rubrics are available on my website in the Homework section. Sixth graders have just completed an argumentative paper on Big vs. Small government. We discussed the importance of presenting a clear, strong claim and then backing it up with evidence. Much of our homework (essays, research) will be typed at home or school. This will enable students to improve their typing skills and learn how to utilize the editing tools in Word. Thank you, again, for your support. Sincerely, Mrs. Chung-Wipff
