1-360
Present: Daniel Enoch, Joan Fiscella (chair), Joan Schuitema, Warren Webb, Ann Weller;

1. Council Charge with a few revisions:
 Coordinate collection development and management and technical services activities,
foster collaboration and assure communication among departments where this work is
performed, and consider ways in which these activities can be made more effective.
 Advise the Steering committee on issues, policies and priorities relating to collections and
technical services and keep the Steering Committee apprised of new developments.
 Solicit recommendations and act as clearinghouse for new initiatives.
 In coordination with other interested parties, develop policies and guidelines on
preservation, including digital reformatting of library materials.
 Oversee the work of appropriate standing committees and create task forces as the need
arises.
Responsibilities may include: binding, digitization (including metadata standards, scanning
standards/preservation, software platforms, and selection of collections to digitize; electronic
collections, Techworks, use statistics).
CTSC may wish to address preservation issues in terms of policy or guidelines; for example, if on
the desirability of scanning damaged materials.
A principal is that any decision that can be handled by departments or by cooperation between
department heads will not need to go to CTSC. Council will focus on policy and priorities as they
involve multiple units. Interested individuals from other units will be invited for discussions as
needed.
The role of the sites will need to be addressed, although it may be on a case by case method,
depending on whether centralization or decentralization is more effective in each case.
Cataloging priorities:
Preparing materials for digitization initiatives such as CIC Google project or possible
CARLI grant, warehouse access, electronic group purchases need to be prioritized along with an
older list of materials. [JBF added this information after the meeting: LHS and Daley gift
backlogs (currently being done in Collections Development); cataloging backlog; curriculum
backlog (to be reassessed); audio visual items, education tests; LC R-RZ to go to NLM; urban
planning documents (from Merriam Library); UN, foreign, Chicago, Cook and collar counties, and
Illinois documents; and document serials. CTSC will be discussing cataloging priorities and
principles at next meeting. The list needs further review, as it dates from 2005.]
A Voyager Systems administrative group may be needed, but CTSC is not the venue for it.
Next meeting: March 13, 10:30-12:00. Krystal Lewis and other members of the Web Oversight
Committee (WOC) will meet with the Council.
