budgets is well underway. In this session we debate the research evidence on good
practice in personal budgets where outcomes have included increased
empowerment & independence.

Dignity is an easy word to say but has many meanings. In this session we consider
how to operationalise it in support planning and safeguarding so that people are able
to say 'I feel that my dignity is respected by care services and my social worker'

Dementia -Jo Moriarty
Improving support for people with dementia is a major policy aim but also a major
challenge. This session looks at what we mean by ‘dementia’ and what does
research tell us about how people with dementia and their carers can best be
supported.

Jo Moriarty
Jo Moriarty is a Research Fellow in the Social Care Workforce Research Unit at
King’s College London. She has undertaken research into services for older people,
including services for people with dementia and their families. In collaboration with
the Race Equality Foundation, she worked on a study of quality of life among older
people from different ethnic groups. Current work includes studies of the adult social
care workforce.
Professor Jill Manthorpe
Jill Manthorpe is Professor of social work at King’s College London and Director of
the Social Care Workforce Research Unit. She has a background of work in the
voluntary sector and in higher education. She has chaired Boards of Trustees and
been a Trustee of a number of voluntary sector groups working with older people.
She has served as a Non-Executive Director of two NHS Trusts and has been Chair
of an Adult Safeguarding Committee.
Her areas of particular research interest are older people, risk and safeguarding.
Professor Manthorpe is a Senior Investigator with the National Institute of Health
Research and an Associate Director of the NIHR School for Social Care Research.
She works with Making Research Count to promote knowledge transfer and is the
Chair of the Editorial Board of Ageing & Society.
