Foods
Lesson Title: Unit Rate
Duration: One 50 min. class period
Course: Junior High Foods
Course #: FS07, FS40
Lesson __1___ of ___1__
Written by: Kimberly Hancock
STANDARD & MEASUREMENT CRITERIA
12.1 Explain the principles of food cost and food yield
Common Core State Standards – ELA and Math connections if applicable:
CCSS Mathematics – 7.RP.A.2b Identify the constant of proportionality (unit rate) in tables,
graphs, equations, diagrams, and verbal descriptions of proportional relationships.
OBJECTIVES
MPS OBJECTIVE
Written in student-friendly terms to post
Students will understand the concept of unit
rate and be able to mathematically find the
unit rate of a product.
Topic: Unit Rate
Do: Students will compute unit rate
Level of thinking: Application
TERMINOLOGY – Must include up to six key terms or concepts
with definitions
Unit Rate – Cost of one
Per – For each
Proportion – Two fractions are equal
INTRODUCTION
Unit rate is a concept that is important when purchasing and pricing food items. Knowing unit
rate can help a buyer procure the best deal and help a seller make a profit.

(Objectives reflected here)
Bell Work: Ppt Slide 1: A real world
introduction to discovering the cost of one unit
(ticket). Direct the students to put their
answers on the note sheet.
1
MPS CTE: LESSON PLAN
Students will find the price of one ticket.
Updated 4/4/12
Ppt Slides 3-5: Discuss what exactly is meant
by “one”. For instance, if we buy a six-pack
of soda, is that the unit? Or is it one
individual soda? Lead students in a discussion
to decide when it would be necessary to know
the cost of one unit. Lead them to see that
the price of a product must be divided by the
number of individual units or servings to get
the unit rate. This is done by setting up
fractions and simplifying them or by setting up
proportions and solving them.
Ppt Slide 6: Hand the students the slip of
paper with the labels and discuss the meaning
of all the things on the label pertaining to unit
price.
Students will discuss the concept of “one”
when purchasing food and figuring cost.
Students should discuss realistic ways to find
one unit and situations where it would be
necessary to know the cost of one.
Students should discover that total price
could be divided by number of individual
units or servings to get unit rate.
Students should set up the fractions and
make the decision as to which purchase is
better.
Students can compare the two labels and
decide which deal is better. They could
decide this with a partner.
Ppt Slides 7-9: Work the example problem in
the apple with the students, then direct them
to complete the rest of the note sheet with a
partner. Circulate throughout the room to see
if the students have grasped the concept.
Calculators can be used if desired. When
everyone is finished, go over the answers by
calling on students to explain their reasoning.
Ppt. Slide 10: Lead the students to discuss
situations where the best buy may not be the
best choice. (Not enough money for the
bigger pkg. that’s a cheaper unit rate, only
need one of something rather than a fourpack, etc.)
Students should set up and simplify the
fractions to discover the unit rates, then
compare the prices and circle the best buy.
Students discuss what factors besides price
may be important when buying products or
perishables.
CLOSURE
Slide 10 above.
FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
The Ticket Out the Door gives the students an opportunity to come up with their own unit rate
example, showing whether or not they understand the concept thoroughly.
CONNECTIONS
Unit rate is a mathematical concept that has application in many real life situations. This
lesson is just one application that directly relates to the knowledge students need in this
course and in real life.
SAMPLE END OF PROGRAM ASSESSMENT QUESTIONS
Must be two or three multiple choice questions with answers highlighted.
