COLLEGE CURRICULUM COMMITTEE January 13, 2010 MINUTES Members Present: Colin Archibald, Joe Bivins, Karen Borglum (co-chair), Lynn Capraun, Dan Dutkofski, William Gombash, Yolanda Gonzalez, Katherine Harris, Anita Kovalsky, James McDonald, Jocelyn Morales (for Catherine Espenscheid), John Niss (co-chair), Storm Russo, Barbara Walls, Betty Wanielista, Rose Watson Ex-Officio Present: Belen Caba, Kurt Ewen, Cheryl Robinson, George Ruiz, Edwin Sanchez Staff Present: Kim Adams (recording) Guests Present: Rhonda Atkinson, Ralph Clemente, Barbara Frazier, Wendy Givoglu, Shannon Hellard, Ruth Prather John Niss and Karen Borglum, Committee co-chairs, each welcomed the Committee back after the break and wished everyone a Happy New Year. 1. Review of Minutes – November 11, 2009 The minutes of the November 11, 2009 meeting were approved by consensus. 2. Discussion Items Curriculum Protocols – Karen Borglum will lead a discussion regarding curriculum proposals, and the various questions and concerns that the Committee addresses. The outcome of this discussion will be used to help create a section in the Curriculum Manual that will assist new members and initiators of proposals to prepare for meetings. Karen began the discussion by saying that she would like to provide help to proposal initiators who feel intimidated by the process and by the expectations of the Committee with regard to content of the proposals. In addition, new Committee members could also benefit from the same kind of instruction, so that they know what to look for when a proposal comes before the Curriculum Committee. She said that a section in the Handbook devoted to this topic could be a valuable resource, and the Committee agreed. Karen asked newer Committee members to talk about things they would have liked to know prior to attending meetings. Some of the comments were: o What is the CCC looking for – with regard to individual proposals and also as curriculum relates to the bigger picture? Should there be a rubric to follow? o How does the course that’s being approved fit into the program? (Context) o People need to know that if their proposal is not approved, they may be able to go back to their department, re-work the proposal, and present it again (not “one chance only”) o For proposals where the initiator is requesting that a course be put into General Education – what does the Committee look for? o Course description language should be Catalog-appropriate and be consistent. o Care should be taken with programs in the number of general education hours required o Important to remember that the proposal initiator has knowledge of the course and department programs; the CCC should look more at the overall picture. o Attend a few meetings prior to presenting – helping to reduce fear of the unknown. o Put proposals first – “flip” agenda, putting the Discussion Items towards the end, instead of at the beginning, so that proposal initiators do not have to wait on long discussions. o The person presenting should have a good understanding of the proposal; preference would be someone who is also on the department’s voter list. o COB working more smoothly would help greatly. 3. Consent Agenda – Course modifications or deletions involving minor editing of course descriptions or level changes which do not impact other departments are eligible for placement on the consent agenda. Any members of the committee may request to remove a proposal from the consent agenda for the purpose of discussion. The following course(s) have outlines in Course Outline Builder which may be viewed in ATLAS: BSC 1010C PLA 2930 Fundamentals of Biology I Selected Topics in Immigration Law The following outlines are being presented as part of the Two-Year Program Review Cycle PLA 2203 PLA 2930 Introduction to Paralegal Practices and Ethics Selected Topics in Paralegal Studies The Consent Agenda was approved by consensus. 4. Regular Agenda 0910-013 Wireless and IP Communication Technician, Tech. Cert., CPM ............... Ali Notash Purpose: (1) To adjust the credit hours for EET 1214C from 2 to 3; (2) Remove CET 2486C; (3) Add 2 credit hours of electives. The electives requirement may be satisfied with any CET prefix course in the course description section of the Valencia Catalog. These modifications will not affect the total program credit requirements. This proposal was approved, effective Fall 2010 (201110). Page 2 0910-023 ETD 1320 Introduction to CADD, CCM .................................. Shannon Hellard Purpose: The purpose of this proposal is to remove all of the prerequisites. The attached syllabus adequately addresses the current course outline; Revised Prerequisites: None (previously, ETD 1100C or industry experience and department approval); Effective Date: Fall 2010 (201110) The Committee decided to move this proposal (0910-023) from its position on the Agenda, since Shannon Hellard presented both proposals. This proposal was approved, with the addition of provisional students to those students who are eligible to take the course. 0910-020 EDF 2720 Children in Schools: Legal, Ethical, and Safety Concerns, CCA ....................................... Rhonda Atkinson Purpose: UCF identifies this course as “other requirements.” Students must have it in order to be accepted into UCF’s College of Education. Thus, offering the course at Valencia enables our students to enter their programs after completing their Associate’s Degree. Other local community colleges (e.g., Seminole) also offer this course; Catalog Course Description: The role of education in children’s lives through the analysis of legal, ethical, and safety concerns; Prerequisites: None; Co-requisites: None; Credit/Class/Lab Hours: 3/3/0; Effective Date: Spring 2010 (201020). 0910-021 EDF 2085 Introduction to Diversity for Educators, CCM ....... Rhonda Atkinson Purpose: EDF 2005 provides foundational content. In addition, both EDF 2005 and EDF 2085 have a 15 hour observation requirement. Taking these concurrently often poses problems in completing the total 30 hours of observation for both courses; Revised Prerequisites: EDF 2005 (previously, None); Effective Date: Fall 2010 (201110). 0910-020: EDF 2720 – There was a brief discussion, during which time the initiator was asked how this course would be marketed to students, given that it is not part of a Valencia program. She said that this will most likely be done via ATLAS announcements; through Valencia counselors and academic advisor; and via a website that is linked with UCF. The course was approved with the following addition at the beginning of the first sentence of the Catalog Course Description: “This course will explore the role of. . .” 0910-021: EDF 2085 – This proposal was approved with the following change to the prerequisites: add, “or department approval.” 0910-022 ALL 2940-2944 All Internship and Service Learning Courses, CCM ................... .......................................... Barbara Frazier Purpose: Modification of prerequisites to respond to the demands of students as well as employers wanting to provide active learning experiences; Revised Prerequisites: Satisfactory completion of all mandated courses in reading, mathematics, English, and English for Academic Purposes; a minimum 2.0 institutional or overall GPA; and 12 credits, including any required program/discipline-related courses. The Internship Office, in collaboration with the Program Director/Program Chair/Coordinator will have the discretion to provide override approval as it Page 3 relates to the waiver of required program/discipline-related courses when students have employer sponsorship or transfer courses that demonstrate skills in prerequisite areas that ensure a successful internship experience (previously, Satisfactory completion of all mandated courses in reading, mathematics, English, and English for Academic Purposes; a minimum 2.0 overall GPA; 12 credits, including any required program/discipline-related courses, and Internship Office, Program Director/Program Chair/Coordinator, or Departmental approval); Effective Date: Fall 2010 (201110). 0910-022 – ALL 2940-2944 Courses: There was quite a bit of discussion regarding the best and most understandable wording to be used for the lengthy prerequisites. In the end, it was determined that the wording requested would be modeled after the current POS 2940 (Internship in Civic Leadership); and that there will be a “Note” added to the Catalog, page 65, informing students of the internship and service learning prerequisites. The new prerequisite wording is as follows: “Satisfactory completion of all mandated courses in reading, mathematics, English, and English for Academic Purposes; a minimum 2.0 institutional or overall GPA; and 12 credits, including (for each course, the required discipline-specific/related courses required will be listed here). The Program Director/Program Chair/Program Coordinator or Internship Placement Office has the discretion to provide override approval as it relates to the waiver of required program/discipline-related courses.” Wording for the “Notes” section is as follows: “The Internship Placement Office, in collaboration with the Program Director/Program Chair/Program Coordinator will have the discretion to provide override approval as it relates to the waiver of required program/discipline-related courses when students have employer sponsorship or transfer courses that demonstrate skills in prerequisite areas that ensure a successful internship experience.” 0910-024 Film Production Technology with Specializations in: Cinematography and Post-Production, A.S. Degree, CPM ......................................... Ralph Clemente Purpose: The Film Production Technology Program has not offered the Post-Production Specialization for many years. All students entering into our Film Program are all working towards the A.S. Degree in Film Production Technology with a Specialization in Cinematography. Removing both Specializations and keeping the A.S. Degree in Film Production Technology without any Specialization will be easier for our students when it comes to declaring majors and Financial Aid. In addition, we will no longer be advertising a Specialization that we do not offer; Revised Program Title: Film Production Technology, A.S. Degree; Effective Date: Fall 2010 (201110). This proposal was approved; the pre-major protocol for “sunsetting” a program will be followed. Page 4 0910-025 FRE 1100 Elementary French I, CCD ........................................ Information Items Common Course Prerequisite Changes – FACTS.org has posted changes in common course prerequisites to the following programs: Public Relations and Organizational Communication Psychology, General Journalism Horticultural Science Health Services Administration Cardiopulmonary Science This information has already been forwarded to all deans, as some of the changes impact transfer plans and programs other than those listed above. Karen spoke briefly to this item, telling the Committee that for Cardiopulmonary Science, the common course CGS X160 is only offered at three Florida colleges. Karen addressed this issue with them (FACTS.org), and they have agreed to take this before the Articulation Coordinating Committee at its next meeting. They will ask to substitute CGS X060, which is more commonly offered. Karen will hold off making Catalog changes for this until she hears from them with the outcome. Radiography Courses Scheduled for Deletion – At the February, 2009 CCC meeting, numerous changes were presented with regard to the Radiography Program. Two courses, RTE 2533 (Radiographic Procedures IV) and RTE 2854L (Radiographic Clinical Education VI) were approved for deletion, with deletion dates of Fall 2009 (201010). It has come to our attention that these courses will continue to be needed for those students on the old track, through Summer 2011 (201130). In order to comply with SCNS, these courses will be put back into the Catalog for the 2010-11 Catalog year. The next meeting of the College Curriculum Committee is scheduled for February 10, 2010, and will be held on the East Campus, Room 3-113.
