Troy Gifford Purpose: To replace MUT 1121 as part of the creation of an A.A. Music Pre-major and better align Valencia's course offerings with those of state public universities; Catalog Course Description: Study of the fundamentals of music through analysis and composition. Designed for music majors. It is recommended that students take MUT 1241C concurrently with this course; Pre- and Co-requisites: None; Credit/Class/Lab Hours: 3/4/0; Effective Date: Fall 2010 (201110). There was a good deal of discussion generated by the fact that this course (as well as all of the Music Theory courses) has 3 credit hours and 4 contact hours. The representatives from this area (Wendy Givoglu, Troy Gifford, and Alan Gerber) said that courses from the music department historically have had more contact hours than credit hours, mainly due to the fact that there is so much content to be taught that if contact hours and credit hours were matched, the program hours would be too many. Several Committee members had computers with them, so Karen Borglum and Dan Dutkofski looked at the State Course Numbering System website with regard to what other State colleges and universities are offering and the credit/contact hours. They found that there are a number of variations, with some colleges doing exactly the same thing as Valencia. With these facts in mind, the Committee decided to approve the course as submitted. 0910-188 MUT 1112 Music Theory II, CCA.................................................... Discussion Items Dean Representation on College Curriculum Committee – John Niss will lead a discussion regarding dean representation on the CCC. John turned the discussion over to Karen. She said that with the end of terms for many of the CCC members, a question has arisen regarding dean representation on the Committee. As an aside, Karen said that she and Kim had discussed the possibility of changing the date when terms end for Committee members, which will be discussed in more depth a little later in the meeting. Karen gave some background for the current issue: last year, when Joe Bivins’ term was finished, he agreed to stay for an additional year so that there would be consistency in representation (Joe Lyn Look’s term was through and Dan Dutkofski was new to the CCC). Now, Joe has expressed a desire to continue with the Committee, although his term is once again over. In the meantime, Nasser Hedayat had also expressed an interest in becoming a dean representative (A.S.). Since Dan Dutkofski, the current A.S. dean, can function as either an A.A. or an A.S. dean, the thought was to move him to A.A. dean representative and make Nasser the A.S. representative. The question now is whether to leave the current dean representation at two, which is what the Curriculum Manual states; or change the representation to three. Karen spoke at the IAC regarding the matter, but there were not enough deans in attendance for them to feel comfortable making a decision, so they recommended that Karen bring the issue to the CCC meeting for discussion and a recommendation. Michele McArdle, A.A. dean alternate, was in attendance to speak to the issue. She suggested that since there will be more B.A./B.S. programs coming to the CCC, it may be advisable to add a dean for that purpose, and leave Joe Bivins to represent the A.A. area. Subsequently, that would mean that the East Campus would have a voice, since both Dan and Nasser are from the West Campus. Along those same lines, Wendy Givoglu suggested the option of three deans representing A.A./A.S./and B.A.,B.S. areas. John Niss said that he feels uncomfortable making such a decision with the small group in attendance today (just as the IAC felt uncomfortable with their small group); however, a decision needs to be made since Joe’s term is over. Some members of the CCC felt that there is no benefit to having three deans, since the meetings are open and anyone can attend and have a voice. Also, some members feel that the curriculum process itself is not truly faculty-led, as is intended. Karen said that the matter will be discussed again at the June IAC meeting, at which time they will either reappoint Joe Bivins or appoint another dean for the upcoming term. It was decided that the September meeting will be a good time to resume the discussion of whether the CCC wants to have a third dean representative. Page 6 At this point in the meeting, Karen asked if the Committee is willing to approve extending members’ terms until through the July meeting. That means that the new rotation will begin in September, since there is no meeting in August. In addition, Karen asked Joe Bivins if he would be willing to continue his tenure on the Committee. He agreed, and the Committee approved the extension of terms. 2010-2011 College Curriculum Committee Manual Revisions – Karen Borglum will review the proposed changes to the 2010-11 CCC Manual, including a new section dealing with the faculty process for preparing curriculum proposals. Karen asked the Committee members if they have had an opportunity to review the revised Manual, as well as for any feedback they may have. It was recommended that for the new section on the curriculum process for preparing proposals, under Step One, a #7 should be added. The wording will be: “If you need additional guidance, please see your division or department representative. If you still have questions, please contact either Kim Adams or Karen Borglum in the Office for Curriculum and Articulation.” There were no further revisions at that time, so Karen asked for the Committee to send any additional feedback to her via e-mail. As an aside, Edwin Sanchez brought up the issue of students who come to Valencia with partial general education credits, i.e., 2.66 hours for a general education course that Valencia offers as a 3 credit hour course. It was decided that this is a dean issue for transferability, and will be brought up at the next IAC meeting. 5. Information Items There are no Information Items for the June Agenda. The next meeting of the College Curriculum Committee is scheduled for July 14, 2010, and will be held on the East Campus, Room 3-113. (If there are limited Agenda items, the meeting will be held electronically.) Deadline for submission of materials for the July Agenda is June 30, 2010. Page 7
