Discussion Items

Changes in A.A. Pre-Majors - Discussion regarding the upcoming change from A.A. PreMajors to Transfer Guides/Plans
Karen Borglum began the discussion with a brief explanation of the events leading up to the
change from A.A. Pre-Majors to Transfer Plans. Currently, SACS requires institutions to have
outcomes for all courses and programs. Karen said that it was unclear whether SACS would
consider the A.A. Pre-Majors actual programs or advising tools. A letter was sent to Dr.
Belle Whelan, President of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, asking the
question, what constitutes a program? She responded that any degree path that contains
at least 9 credit hours towards the stated discipline is considered a program, and would
require outcomes be established and faculty set up to oversee the program.
Valencia currently has 41 Pre-Majors, with the majority of those having at least 9 credit
hours towards the stated discipline. However, many of the common prerequisites do not
line up, making it difficult if not impossible for a student to complete the pre-major and
move seamlessly into a four-year institution. In order to continue the pre-majors, most of
the “programs” would require major re-working, in addition to appointing faculty oversight
and writing outcomes.
A number of discussions with a broad-based group of faculty across disciplines have yielded
the decision to change the name of the majority of the A.A. Pre-Majors to Associate in Arts
Degree, Transfer Plan for xxxxxxx (i.e., Accounting). It is believed that this is a more
accurate representation for the students. There are currently seven pre-majors that will
continue as pre-majors including theater, dance, art, and sign language interpretation.
These programs will be re-worked so that the common prerequisites match, they will have
faculty appointed for oversight, and will have outcomes developed for them. In addition,
there are currently seven articulated pre-majors (architecture, engineering, and IT) that will
continue as Pre-Majors.
The impact of this decision on students’ financial aid was discussed. How the degree audit is
run will help determine financial aid. Several scenarios have been presented to Dr.
Romano, but no decision has been made as yet.
Also discussed was how this change will impact the Catalog, and how it will be
presented/advertised to the students. One possibility is that there could be a section set up
in the Catalog called “Educational Enhancements,” with the transfer plans listed there.
Preference was shown for a section that will be specifically for the transfer plans. In
addition, there will be an explanation in the Catalog of the differences between transfer
plans/A.A. pre-majors/articulated pre-majors.
3.

4. Regular Agenda
The first item on the Regular Agenda, 0809-057, was moved near the end of the Agenda
(directly after 0809-076). There were questions regarding the proposal and the initiator,
Barbara Ball, was not able to be in attendance until later in the meeting.

Catalog Course Description: This course is designed to prepare students to apply and
understand the advanced principles and applications of networking hardware. Some of the
topics covered include advanced router configurations, LAN switching, network management,
WAN technologies, and advanced network design. This course combines the third and the
fourth courses designed to prepare students for the Cisco Certified Networking Associate exam.
(Special Fee: $70.00); Prerequisites: CET 1610C or department approval; Co-requisites: None;
Credit/Class/Lab Hours: 8/4/4; Effective Date: Fall 2009 (201010)

0809-060 Cisco Network Associate (CCNA), Technical Certificate, CPM .............. Wael Yousif
Purpose: To allow students to register for CET 2615C and CET 2620C using one course number
– CET 2622C. This course combines course content for the other two courses, and will be
offered as an option; Effective Date: Fall 2009 (201010) (Catalog Markup Attached)
0809-058, 0809-059, and 0809-060 – The course addition and two program modification
requests were discussed and initially were moving towards approval. However, issues with
the way the course is structured, in that a student could receive credit for the first half of the
course if they were not able to complete the second half, caused concerns with regard to
enrollment and financial aid. It was finally decided to link CET 2615C and CET 2620C, rather
than create a new course. The three proposals were removed from the agenda with this
decision.

0809-073 COT 2104 Foundations of Discrete Mathematics, CCM .............. Colin Archibald
Purpose: Remove the following line from the Catalog Course Description: “It is designed for
students in the A.A. Pre-Major: IT degree.” This course is now a requirement in other

Topics include statements; truth tables and tautologies; arguments; rules of demonstrations;
conditional demonstrations and indirect proof; logic of quantifiers; algebra of sets; definitions
and axioms of set theory; informal proof; relations and functions; mathematical induction;
strings and other topics in discrete mathematics; Effective Date: Fall 2009 (201010)
This proposal was approved as submitted.
0809-074 Computer Programming and Analysis, A.S. Degree, CPM ............... Colin Archibald
Purpose: There are 8 major modifications: 1) Remove all references to the BS IST articulation.
This articulation is not a good option for students in this program, and it complicated the
degree requirements. The reference to the articulation in the preamble is still valid, but there is
more burden on the students to pick their courses appropriately if they choose that path; 2)
Remove A+ Hardware completely. This was added to be consistent with our common-core
objective with the CIT degree, but it was too costly; 3) Remove list of Business Electives. This
was added for the IST articulation. Still require one business course. Require GEB1011 Intro to
Business; 4) Require Social, Legal, Ethical Issues in IT or Freshman Comp II as one of the GenEd
courses. The Comp II requirement was added so students pursuing a Bachelor’s could choose
that path; 5) Require COP 2830 Scripting Languages. All AS CP&A graduates will be able to
build dynamic web sites; 6) Require a 3 semester path of programming language courses. All
AS graduates will have taken at least one object-oriented language class; 7) Remove the distinction betwee
and non-restricted electives. Only one list of electives for CP&A, done by prefix. The CET prefix
is in this list allowing students to take the A+ classes. This simplifies the degree significantly;
Page 6
8) Remove note on CIW Foundation certification; Effective Date: Fall 2009 (201010) (Voter
List, Catalog Changes/Markup, Summary of Changes in IT Curriculum Attached)
This proposal received provisional approval. Colin was asked by the Committee to research
UCF’s requirement for “higher math,” and bring his findings back to the March meeting. A
suggestion was made to change the wording to “Higher MAC Math Course.” This will be
determined at the March meeting.
Also, the degree notes (1,2, etc.) will be added following the A.S. Degree. Currently, they are
listed only at the end of the Technical Certificate, making them difficult to find.
0809-075
Computer Programming Specialist with Specializations in: Computer
Programming; Web Development, Tech. Cert., CPM ..................... Colin Archibald
Purpose: Please refer to the document attached for all changes (see above for details);
Effective Date: Fall 2009 (201010) (Voter List, Catalog Changes/Markup, Summary of Changes

this Certificate.
0809-076
Computer Programming with Specializations in: Computer Programming; Web
Development; Game Programming, Tech. Cert., CPM .................... Colin Archibald

Web development specialization now requires Web Development Tools, and XML and Web
Services. Leads to graduates with reasonable competencies for the workplace; Effective Date:
